    Hey lads and ladies,

In the market for a car/jeep at the moment, once my current car is sold. The problem is I don't know what to change too, I have several ideas but a lot of them are unsuitable or possibly unrealistic!

I had a diesel A4 for 2 years and changed to a diesel Accord almost a year ago, I've got bug again and feel like a change, so here's the situation...

I'm 21 with two and half years named experience, one year in my own name, no claims and no points. My mileage varies from 300 a week to over 500 between college and weekend trips. I've always had a saloon so it has spoiled the family in a sense as they all hop into my car for trips here or there and they're not too pleased about me getting a 2 seater/3 door. I'll have about €7k to spend when I sell the Accord but I don't feel like putting any more money with it.

I'd like to get away from diesel for a while and have something more fun, but with that mileage is it out of the question when I don't have a shed full of money to go along with it? Some say petrol cars are more reliable and cheaper to run but are the savings that big?

I like the power of the Accord (about 146bhp) for overtaking so I think it would be hard to have anything less at this stage, but I just find diesel a bit sluggish to get going so for that reason a petrol engine has been on my mind!

Secondly I need a choice of motor, I've considered everything from an Integra DC5 to a Landcruiser swb, and a 318Ci to a Focus ST.

I'm leaving this totally open to suggestion as I'm out of ideas. Any input is appreciated at this time. :)

Hmm, looking good on both fronts there! One thing about the 325i that bothers me though, those BMW engines seem to give very little power for their size? Now maybe it's enough, but to go taxing a car with an engine like that, I'd be hoping to have more power out of it!

Has anyone driven one or would you have any comment on it?

I was always put off the BMW petrols for that reason, seems to be very little power out of the engines from the 316 right up to the 325!

    M3 all the way:p

The 325I has 218hp which is plenty for this car ;)

I haven't been driven or driving a 325I, but I was driven in a 320I and it was pretty good overall. I must imagine 325 is the best of both worlds.

    400 more tax
    48hp more
    Six pot
    325s are generally equipped better

How high in the tax bracket do you want to go up to op?

If you're looking for an ST, I would suggest one that belongs to a user here - draffodx. He is selling if for absolute peanuts!

Well at the minute I'm on €925 yearly for the accord, ideally wouldn't like to go over this! Mentioned the ST as I'd be commercialising it once the private tax runs out.

The 325 sounds like a nice option, although power wise an Integra would match it and the tax is around the 600 mark! The commercial ST is a real beauty in the tax to power ratio ;) has anyone got a link to the one that the user on here is selling?

Isn't commercialising a car expensive and difficult? I mean you'd save €600 a year in tax but wouldn't the cost of it outweigh the savings?

All you have to do is take out the back seats, get their mounting points welded (i.e. destroyed so the seats can't go back in), replace the rear window glass with panels, get it DOE'd and of you go.

Would cost me about 150, between a sheet of plywood, some carpet and window tinting! Removing seats and welding is about an hours work and I can manage that here at home. On a car like the ST the tax is 1200 odd, and commercial tax is 300 if I remember correctly? So 900 savings a year would be at least ten weeks fuel for me! :)

The 325 will be cheaper to insure, because it's got a lower insurance group than the Integra or the Focus, but it's all up to you of course.

Have you checked your insurance OP? You could get stung badly at your age if you're looking at ST/Type R type cars...

Pretty sure you need engineer's cert also. To tax as commercial you will need VAT registration to prove you are a business

    I wouldn't like to see the insurance for a 21yo on a s2000

Vat number or herd number, have the herd number here waiting :)

I've checked a couple of cars with aviva, such as a 320d and I'm pretty sure the ST, they said there wouldn't be any change in the premium at the minute! Could change come renewal time in November I suppose?

Has anyone got experience with a 325? I know I can't expect great figures here but I'd like to hear how they are on fuel for 350+ miles a week :)
