What courses do I need to do in order to take over the family farm and qualify for the single payment/disadvantages areas payments?

Incorrect. The land will need to be going in your name along with the herd/flock no. and then a solicitor and teagasc advisor will be able to sort it for ya. It is a simple transfer of entitlements form.

    NO GREEN CERT IS NECESSARY.

The only advantage to green cert is reduced taxes on transfer of the farm if you are under 35 at the time of transfer.

If the farm is transferred before you turn 35 and you have not done the green cert you can complete it before your 35th birthday and claim back the overpayment (provided you have time).

To qualify for farm payments do you not need to have certain courses done?

The farm DOESNT need to be in your name, only the herd number does. Then you fill out the transfer of entitlement form. Give the entitlements department a call before you fill in the fill to make sure its doen right.

This was the bane of my life for 2 months, it didn't help that i set the farm up as a limited company when the farm was transferred last year either.
I had to co-ordinate between 4 government agencies/Agri dept. and none of the feckers would talk to each other (hopefully it'd be easier when there is no ltd company involved) - my local DVO, the entitlements office in Portlaoise, the technical dept in dublin and Agri dept in Cavan, all telling me to get a form for the other dept, and send t to them...... such a circus.

Ok so people are focusing too much on the transfer bit. My questions is what courses does a "new" farmer need to have completed to qualify for single farm payment etc.

You quite simply only need the herd number in your name! No courses need to be done!!

Correct and to dispell another thing - the OP will not be entitled to SFP in his own right unless he is going to the National Reserve in which case he will need an Agricultural Qualification.

So once I have my dads herd number in my name I can claim the SFP?

You agree with rellig but then say I cannot claim the SFP with out a qualification?

I am very confused. Should make use of that IFA membership for advice!

Is it your Dad's SFP or have you any SFP?

If it is your Dad's and you are transferring it across - you are fine.

What I was getting at is SFP is based on a historic situation and as you were not farming in those years yourself you will not get SFP in your own right.

    Hopefully that makes more sense.

All you need to do is get the herd number in your name. This is done through your local DVO office. Next you get your dad's existing entitlements transferred into your name. This is done by the agri office in portlaoise.

No qualifications or certs or anything else required for the transfer apart from form filling and witness signatures.

The green cert only comes into it for stamp duty if transferring the land.

The section of the agri office in Portlaoise you need to contact is Transfer of Entitlements Section. The number is 1890200560. Its obviuosly too late this year but you have until the closing date next may to get it transferred for next year.

Correct. I misled the OP on this bit, but when you get entitlements transferred you need land (or maps anyhow) for the amount of entitlements owned.

Not necessarily. I bought entitlements in 2010 and this is common practice. I don't hold any agricultural qualifications.

Apologies only saw the "in his own right" part now.
