Im looking at buying a car
The car was first registered in the UK.
I asked the dealer does he have the V5C cert from the UK and he doesn't.

I want the V5C document number so I can Simply check the MOT history in the UK.

Obviously I am not the owner of this car......yet ; )

How would I go about getting the V5C document number ? I don't even want the actual document or anything, just the document number.

    Initial thoughts are :

    Vrt office
    NCT office
    MOT office
    Revenue office
    DVLA UK
    VOSA UK

As you can see I'm a bit lost, as there are so many agencies that could have this information

And then even after going to an agency, they Probably wont give it to me due to data privacy ****e

    Any ideas ?

Is this seller not in the uk then?

Is it on Irish or uk plates?

    No. The seller is here
It's on Irish plates now for the last year
Was on UK plates for 4 years.

You could pay for a history check.

Via what exact site ? An Irish or uk one ?
And would it not be handy to have the v5c document in this situation anyways so as to cross check

It'd be great to have the v5, but realistically you'll never get that from someone selling a car on Irish plates.

The likes of motorcheck.ie will give you a good history check. Also see if it has finance owing, any declared accidents, mileage discrepancies

The previous UK reg is on the Irish VLC, just history check that. No Irish reg car will have the V5 as you have to surrender it when VRTing it.

Thanks. The current seller does not have the NCT cert from the last NCT

going another direction, is there any way one could get the mileage from the NCT office of this car at its last NCT.

    - to contact the NCT office and say thinking of buying this car, here is the registration, could you verify that the NCT was done on this date and what mileage was on the car on this date.

Just watched a programme on TV 3 about clocking etc. and it's making me more determined to double check all the information I can

Current owner can request a copy of the NCT certificate but as far as I know for data protection issues nobody else can.

That bloody data protection is some pain, way OTT.

So current owner is only one who can do this

Could the current DEALER request this information ?

Is there not a service history you can verify?

There is.......but I would still like to see the NCT document from the last NCT.

I'd run far away from a UK car with missing or no service history, NCT/MOT certs. All these will show the mileage at the time they were issued. If they are missing it would set alarm bells ringing with me.

On many cars you can scan the ECU to tell you the correct mileage, Volkswagen being the biggest example. Would be expensive to sort as you would need to pay someone with the equipment to come with you and use it. Although if you know someone then most reputable dealers wouldn't mind getting the car scanned during a viewing.

If you an find the V5 number or a copy of one of the MOT test sheets, you can check mileage history back to 2005 on this official tool.
