Was at japfest over the weekend and wouldnt mind getting into the drifting scene. Have had an e36 323 and then m3 so familiar with sideways action (on the track of course)
Now have a daily commuter Focus and an FTO for amusement.
Thinking of getting a third car it's probably gonna sit up for a few months and I'll do a few jobs on, most likely gonna be purely a track day car but not decided yet.
Any ideas for a car? Budget is in and around 1500 to a very max of 2000. Has to be rear wheel drive and ideally something with an engine done in many variations of size with parts relatively cheep and easily accessible.

Nissan Silvia S14a - well priced, very tuneable, reliable, well specced and fast!

S14 or for something different you could get an MX-5 and throw a turbo or another engine in it.

There's not a hope you'd pick up an S14 for 1500, unless it's seriously damaged. As for mx-5... with a turbo.. seriously? way out of budget, and the short wheelbase makes them very difficult to keep sideways. NOT an ideal starter drifter. Lots of other considerations with them too.

E36 is the way to go tbh. You'll pick up a 325/328 for cheap

For the love of god, don't buy anything in good nick to use as a drift slut, it's going to take some hell of a beating an you'll only be ruining what could have been kept as a lovely clean car.
Something with scratches, dents and shabby paint but with a solid engine and running gear.

Manual too. Damn! That's some find, though it is not a great drift base. It would be a shame to destroy such a thing on track too.

If we are talking track day then 328 should be easy to get for that budget. Weld diff, take out interior, lighten her up and off you go.

if yor making a drift missle ( believe thhats the right term, if not shoot me )

what you want/need is something you can buy for 1000 and a rouher example for parts for 500... with 500 left for a decent LSD & camber...

old turbo volvo or similar would be my prefference, depends im your apptitude with mechanics im sure ( i.e how much work you can do yourself and to what scale... )

Yea was considering a Silvia but cheapest one i can find is a €2000 S13, it's the very roof of my budget so it will be sitting around for a good while before i can even start turning it into a drift car.

MX5 came into my head a while back but i would have serious trouble getting it over 200bhp on a budget. E36 is the fall back option if i cant come up with any other cars.

Waay over budget. €2000 is the very very top of my budget and that's at a stretch. Good find though, thanks.

Half thinking of a legnum vr4 and convert to a rear wheel drive, messy but doable. Also have a friend of a friend with one sitting in his yard crashed. Engine is still good though, that's 280 bhp right there.

That was at €2,500 this morning or am i wrong?
€250 is alot to drop after only 3 days!! Crying shame it's a 3-4 hour drive, wouldn't mind having a look at it.

No bother, I'd say you'd get it within budget tho if you arrived with cash in your hand. He's dropped the price since yesterday. ;)

I would go with this one if I were you, perfect drifters car and this one looks to be in great nick.

The only resignation I'd have is that it's too nice. I hate seeing lovely clean examples being ruined, I'd pick something that's got some god awful body kit and a load of bumps and scrapes.

The MR2 isn't great for drifting. Being mid engined it's much better suited for time attack, it's a more ballanced drive that'll probably try and kill you if you make the arse hang out.

A 280ZX could be good, never seen one set up to drift but it's got everything you'd want. And they're pretty cheap.

S14 or e36 with a 2.8 an m3. e36's are probably harder to drift than an s14 because they have more grip.

The s14 is so easily tunable however, exhaust, uprated fuel pump and a boost controller and you'd be at 250hp which will be lively enough. Spend the rest on stiffer suspension and a decent brake setup and you're sorted.
