Piece taken from the Kerryman newspaper

TRALEE Cycling Club's have plans next year for a three day Tour of Kerry 2013.
This Tour of Kerry, called ' The Kingdom Alliance Sportive', is organised as a 'Gathering 2013' event, and will mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of Tralee Cycling Club. It is set to be a huge draw for cyclists from all over the country.
Scheduled to take place on the June Bank Holiday weekend on from June 13, The Kingdom Alliance Sportive will include 3 stages, starting and finishing in Tralee, and take riders around North and East Kerry in Stage 1, through the McGillicuddy Reeks on the 'Queen Stage' on Sunday, and the Dingle Peninsula on Stage 3.
The total distance covered will be 300 miles, and the event will be run as a 'Sportive'. A 'cyclosportive' to give the event its proper name, will ensure that both leisure and competitive cyclists are catered for.
A dedicated website for the event is due to be launched shortly, and will run in tandem with Tralee Cycling Club's website at www.traleecc.ie

You can register for this event on www.tkas.ie it is currently special offer of €70 for all three days but price goes up in January.
It is basically a tour of Kerry, the beauty of it is that yourr base remains the same throughout with a northern route taking in the coastline, a western route on the Dingle penninsula and the souther route taking in Killarney and the mountains. Some tough climbs involved each day so its a really good challenge.

What does one get for the entry fee, jersey?, food stops? also how much goes to the beneficiaries? Website has loads of into, but I can't seem to find basic info.
    good luck with the event

You can do one day or two days or all three its up to you, you also have option of 50 mile or 100 mile routes. Each stage includes food stops and a goody bag is also included for competitors. Although the event is timed it is not a race. The proper cycle top is an optional extra at €50.

Just got an email from them:
3 day sportive, 100 miles per day.

    More details at www.tkas.ie

Looks great, but what are these 'miles' things you speak of?

I guess if someone refers to miles, it shows you what age they are...a bit like if somebody who still follows Leeds United! The stages are 170km, 137Km and 170Km respectively. The scenery is spectacular! All information is on www.tkas.ie and the contact email is contact@tkas.ie

The entry fee covers just that, entry...but also everything you need at the food stops. The goody bag will include an event t-shirt and medal (and its a really nice medal too). Other memorabilia can be purchased on the website and includes an event specific cycling shirt, bibshorts, armwarmers, mitts, gilet, polo shirt and baseball cap.

We will be uploading more information shortly on how to support the beneficiaries.

Hope to see you all in June!!!

The website states that insurance is required for entry, just wondering whats the best option for a non-club cyclist to get covered.

Once you have a Cycling Ireland License you are covered. If you don't have a license, contact Cycling Ireland by email at info@cyclingireland.ie and/or apply for an Introductory Leisure License (only €15) via their website at www.cyclingireland.ie.

Would love to do one stage of this, however the current price of €60 is crazy

    Signed up for 3 days.
Averaging 220km/week with a lot of climbing.
Will be up to close to 300 the week before, hope that will do. Have done a lot of 160-200 sportives but not 3 days in a row

Has anyone worked out the total meters of climbing on each day? There's loads of information on the routes, except this very important bit. (Or maybe it's there and I just missed it).

There are links to Garmin Connect courses for each stage, but the Garmin site doesn't don't show total elevation gain and doesn't allow the courses to be exported as GPX to a smarter site that would display the total elevation.

Edit: found the routes on ridewithgps (go to ridewithgps.com/routes and search for keyword TKAS).

    Day 1: 1,396m
    Day 2: 1,886m
    Day 3: 1,965m

Very tempted by this. Considering blowing all my Brownie points and more on this even if it is still very early in the season.

Give them credit - I think they listened and I see the 1/Day cost is now down to €35. However - still needs a tweaking cos it only applies to the 50km route so I presume the 100km is still €60.

Don't know if I bother driving all the way to Tralee to cycle 50km...sure I can do that at home any evening and still be back for Fair City!

So - Note to organisers... you nearly there (it will suit the newbies living locally ) but you need to look beyond the financials on this one if you want to attract the next level cyclists!

I know exactly how you feel - I was hoping my training for this event would be far more than i have done currently so i am resigned to doing only the 50 miler each day.
I know the routes and the scenery is spectacular. This will be only my third organised ride having taken up cycling only last year, but the fact is you cannot beat riding in a large group - it spurs you on and its great to know that we will be easily seen by cars etc.
I did one leg of the cycle against suicide and thought it was great also did Slea head ride the other week.
The long range weather forecast is good so at least we should be drier, warmer and have less wind for the Kingdom Alliance Sportive.

The shorter routes are 50 Miles. Would agree that the pricing needs tweaking. Could be a great event...but it needs numbers.
I'm local to Kerry but cannot justify €60 so looks like a group spin on Sat similar to stage 2 is on the cards.

Just in the door after 3 days of this.

Great event, brilliant routes, especially days 2&3.

Suprised numbets were so low. Day 2 on a par with last years rebel tour and stage 3 out on it's own.

    Very well run event.

Just did the three days as well - a fantastic experience, would really recommend. I surprised how everybody seemed to be full of energy on the last day, once we got the Connor pass under our belts the pace just picked up and everybody really seemed to enjoy it.
A friend of mine recently did a three day club cycle and he also said that all the riders were surprised how well they felt on the third day, even those without a huge amount of training. Worth noting for anyone considering doing this next year but is nervous about the multi day aspect, you might surprise yourself!

This was a great event. 3 days that were all very different types of routes.
    The weather made it overall.
Well organised with marshals in all the right places.

Got in with a good bunch of lads on Sat and the same lads came together on the road over yesterday and today. The Dingle Loop and Home was good crack today

Did this event with a group and I have to say it was an absolutely tremendous weekend. The routes were fantastic (well the first day was a bit plain, but only in comparison to the rest) and we got decent weather on days 2 and 3 which really made it enjoyable. The scenery that we passed by around the Gap of Dunloe and Ballaghbeama on Day 2, and the Conor Pass and Slea Head on Day 3 was breathtaking.

Tbh, I'm surprised that half the country wasn't there. There aren't that many multi-day sportives around and, given the location, I think it's unbeatable. This was the first year of the event and hopefully it will go from strength to strength.

Regarding the price, I suppose it's a little bit steep, but I think it was very good value for the €80 I paid for the early bird. Compare that to what you get for your Wicklow 200 entry fee.
