I know that Red Kites, golden Eagles and great spotted woodpeckers are now/ again breeding in Ireland. I see that in Wexford there has been an Glossy Ibis present for the summer.

My question is what new species or species that have previously bred are likely to begin to breed in Ireland. Is the Ibis likely to become a breeding bird here?

Hard to say. Based on ringing recoveries, the majority of Glossy Ibis seen in Ireland in the last few years have originated from southern Spain. The species has significantly expanded its European range in the last 10 years, but I am not aware of any pairs breeding north of the Alps just yet.

As for other species likely to colonise Ireland, Great White Egret would be high on the list, as would Osprey (as a breeder). Outside bets: Cory's Shearwater, Madeirean Storm-Petrel and Cattle Egret.

Egrets bred up here this year.

Great White Egrets started breeding in the UK this year, so they are definatly a possibility going forward:cool:

Apparently, they were breeding in the south before (I think the last time was 70s or 80s) in various S and E coast reedbeds but the populations were small and bad winters got them. I do not follow this as we have just had some brutal winters and they seemed to survive; unless the current juveniles came from parents that came here since. I have seen very recent records from 4 places in Wexford, one near Gorey so they seem to be doing ok. They are outrageously photogenic.
