I always enjoyed Kinsale GC, I used to do some work in Eli Lilly and tried to play their Wed comps. Then dinner in Man Fridays, a few beers at the trad night in the spaniard.

Have they made changes to the course? There was on drivable par 4 (the 9th? ) that was a little dangerous .

    What teams have made it?

Think thats the 10th, still drivable alright.

not sure now long ago you were there but they changed 2nd 3rd and 4th a couple years back. 2nd was a par 3 but its a dogleg par 4 now.

Lovely course alright, try to get out there when im down home in cork

Anyone know if there is an Open Singles on there tomorrow? Thought I saw it in the Examiner Tuesday but nothing on their website about it.

Its not mind blowing or anything but i wouldnt call it "very average". It would be better than the average course around imo.

Kinsale is far better than an average course. I have played it a few times and it is a long course with challenging holes. Each year I play it, it seems to be getting more difficult due to the growth of the young trees. It is a great place for the national finals both for the course and the surrounding area. I wish I was there:(.

I was down on Saturday for a practice & course is in great condition, fairways have lovely layer of grass to play from. We played our Munster finals there too & after the weather the place was really wet with excess water on many holes but the greens were still in great condition,we had lift clean drop on that weekend but no such worries this time & they had greens sanded last weekend so they will have them pristine & quick!!
To describe it as very average is harsh! It's not a worldbeater of a course but it is still a good challenge,At the end of the day it is match play so the quality of course doesn't matter & you just have to beat the opposition! Some lovely holes on back 9 especially, front 9 not as strong. But if you hit the ball well off the tee it sets up good scoring chances! Go a little offline & there are more than enough trees to get in the way!!!
Best of luck to all the Waterford teams(even the Waterford team representing Leinster;)) deise abu

Not too often that I see anyone drive the 10th. You would need a easterly wind behind you and thats rare. 5th(old 4th) is a more likely candidate but again a helping wind is required. Neither hole is particularly dangerous I would say.

yeah, thought of the 5th after I posted alright. Ive driven the 10th once thats how I remember!

I suppose thinking about it if you hit your drive left on 5 you might land on that road where people come off the 1st and onto the 2nd. extremely rare if it would ever happen I would think.

The 14th and 16th would be particular favourites of mine

It was the 5th I was thinking about, 4th was a big dogleg right?

I am sure I have driven the 5 th many times. Is the 3rd green and 4th tees not just right of the green?

I certainly would say it is far above average, the last 7 holes a bunch of fun to play,

you have the right hole alright, that must of been before the layout change. it was the 2nd green and 3rd tees to the right before. the new layout now no longer has the green there as it was extended to a par 4. the now second tees are further away from the drivable green aswell

great to hear this course will test some of the best matchplayers in the country.. im sure the gui are no mugs in selecting testing/challenging courses for their showpiece finals. ive heard that ncw in purcell r very confident.... also that castletroy junior cuppers :eek:are none too hopeful eventhough they are muinster reps..

That's a questionable statement, I'm not trying to upset people, I have just been told by many that the course is average/no great shakes, and some maintain it isnt even that good.

I dont know what the selection strategy is. Could it be that their "centenary" is this year?

I'm not a member of Kinsale but I've played it a number of times as it is close to me. I would suggest playing the course and judge it for yourself instead of judging it from other people's opinions of it.

The hole was driveable when it was the old 4th and is still driveable for the very long hitters but less so from new tee box.

Correct. It is the club's centenary year( The Course is a lot younger than that). I would still say it is an above average course without being anything spectacular. It is known in Cork as a real test and has come on in leaps and bounds in the last few years as it has matured.

I haven't played all the courses in cork but I would certainly put Kinsale ahead of Lee Valley

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,848 ✭✭✭soundsham

I agree it's a middle of the road track
Most club Golfers around the city wouldn't travel down there too often in my opinion
Lee Valley may have come back a little but I'd put kinsale in the 5 out of 10 range
Lee valley would be a little better

i think they have a great chance alright, we reached the finals last year in Castlerock with Athenry in the Purcell and was hoping to reach Kinsale this year, but lost to a very good Gort side. 5/2 to win outright on P Power at the minute, not bad!

Best of Luck to Joe Bernie & the Athenry Junior Cup team!

Well the time is almost upon us..........under starters orders at the moment....... i see that confidence in ncw purcell team i mentioned earlier has been backed up by some hard cash... gone from 11/4 (3rdfavs) to 2/1 outright favs.. heinze..i know you think gort are very strong and i know the are also.. but id have to follow the cash on this one.. so hear goes.. The title will be fought out between Gort and (limerick) and munster reps NCW. I definately think ncw were overpriced @11/4.. as i see it a straight shoot out with them and Gort. Im taking the 5/6 for semi final and will be taking the 2/1 thats on offer outright . good luck to all....... LET THE GAMES BEGIN:cool::cool::cool::cool:.

I see NUI Maynooth are in the Barton. How's does it work with a college team?

Haven't heard of it before, is it any student in the college is eligible once they have a GUI h/cap?

Have other colleges played in the past?

looks like you were spot on rambo jon, gort just got through on the final green. NCW had a comprehensive win again Royal Dublin. Big final tmoro.

Our guys are having a tough time in the Junior Cup final at the minute but theres pleanty of holes left to turn it around!

I'd say the dogs on the streets know the craic with NCW, the only surprise is that PP were stupid enough to offer odds.

NCW beat us (Shannon) in the Munster Final in Fota on the first play off hole in the final match. Two of the matches didn't see the 13 hole. They are very very strong. I'd have to fancy them to win it

hi again folks.. congrats to both teams making it to the final should be a cracker... im finding it totally impossible to split them at this stage.. one thing for sure is that gorts battle will benefit them for the final tomorrow..good luck to all and may the best team win.

Joe is some man. I played against him last year in the zone final. huge striker of the ball.

was really hoping you'd do it. we had a really good athlone team this year but your team was excellent when you beat us. we wont feature again for a while, our 3 best players, myself included, are gone too low for it now.

forget the name of the chap I was playing against but he used to be a 1 handicapper and gone back out to 5. he was pure class!

joes a great player alright, he was itching to be playing down there instead of managing the lads. im sure he'll be involved playing next year.

i see gort were well beaten in the final, im shocked to be honest, they were so strong all year, gave us a lesson. NCW must be some golfers... Well done to them. Its a tough trophy to win!

Ah nothing really, at least nothing that every other club isn't doing in their efforts to win the coveted PP shield, they just do it better and their win at any cost attitude is second to none.
Also if you asked them what's a rule book, you be met with blank expressions I'd say.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 213 ✭✭rambojon

Congrats to newcastlewest gc for their win today impressive stuff in the final...im sure Gort went with same ten again which warrants some eyebrow raising considering yesterdays close shave play, allied to fact that their were guys who prob could/should have been given a chance..(thats just my personal opinion) . Well guys as the curtain comes down on another very enjoyable year interclub matchplays remember this THERES ALWAYS NEXT YEAR...;););)

Explain please cos I don't quite understand your remarks.

    1. Win at any cost attitude ???
The club won Munster and all Ireland for the 1st time EVER at any grade/ level and everyone who plays any sport will try to win you're wasting your time if you don't go out to win

    2. I'm sure when you say
'at least nothing that every other club isn't doing in their efforts to win the coveted PP shield, they just do it better '
I presume you mean playing the game

    3. Probably the most damning of your ignorance
'if you asked them what's a rule book, you be met with blank expressions I'd say'

I would love to hear an explanation for this particular one because no person in their right mind would fire off stupid statements like this on a public forum

In case you are wondering I played on that team and have done so for many years with no success and this year we had a bit of luck on our side on more occasions than we wanted so just flicking through these pages to find your small minded muck is an insult to us and our club

I await your explanation followed by an apology

    Shame on you

People often come on here asking what their chances are for making certain teams based on their handicaps etc. A quick snoop on the combined current* handicaps of the players who won the Purcell this year seems to suggest you don't necessarily need to be bang on the handicap limit (27) or have players who are on the way down...

According to my snooping (which could be completely wrong of course), three of the 5 winning pairings would be currently at the 31/32 combined based on their current* handicaps which would be 4/5 shots over the minimum.

*I am aware than Purcell & other interclubs are based on last years lowest so their current handicaps have no real bearing other than being somewhat of an indicator of their current ability.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,528 ✭✭✭BoardsMember

Very carefully worded Mr Larson :)

In reality, the inter club competitions are rife with people who are playing off handicaps that they no longer hold, or that they should not be playing off, however they have managed it.

I would not be too defensive or take it too personally if you are the subject of some trolling.

The very fact that someone wins one of these things, with the exception of the senior cup, is that by definition you have guys that are very good off the handicap they are using for the competition.

That can be understood if it doesn't happen every year, but it becomes a little suspicious if the same players on the same teams do very well every year.

I just think mp62 is just a small bit jealous of NCW win. He either struggles to get on a team representing his own club or he might have been on the wrong end of a defeat by the all ireland champions !!!!
