Does a bigger aerial give a better TV reception?

This may sound like a stupid question, but will replacing my chimney mounted aerial with a larger aerial with more elements be likely to improve my TV reception?

I live in south Belfast, and about 18months ago I had an aerial installed upon a mast, pointing towards Clermont Carn, County Louth to pick up RTE 1&2, TV3 and TG4. The guy insisted in putting up a small aerial, saying it wouldn't make any difference to the reception. Well it's nowhere near as good as it was in my old house about a mile away and my neighbours have a better reception. I am worried that I will lose the channels altogether after ASO. Is a bigger aerial likely to improve my signal?

    Thanks

First answer yes, a bigger aerial may help BUT

    1) You would need a Freeview HD box to get the Irish channels from October 24th. Without the HD version you will get ZERO ROI channels.

    2) Some of RTE's channels are soon going to be broadcast from Belfast itself meaning a big aerial may not longer be needed. It's going to be called "NI minimux". Simply scan using a HD only box on October 25th and they may just arrive perfect. If not you may need to tweak your aerial only slightly.

    3) There are some catches to using the signal broadcast from Belfast instead of getting the true signal from South of the border

    1) It will not carry TV3 nor 3E and may not carry other future channels
    2) RTE2 HD will not be HD quality
    3) Some programming may be "blacked out" because of rights issues.

but otherwise it's a great win for those in Belfast.

Do not adjust your aerials until Clermont Carn is powered up.You may still get
perfect CC pictures. In the meantime buy a Freeview HD box.

Yes once Clermont is at full power (Northwards) you will not have any of the problems associated with analogue fringe reception, and it is going to be packing a hell of a punch for a digital transmitter. Your aerial height will be important, especially if you are in a low lying area (eg. near the Lagan).
