Moved from Sky - This UPC takes a bit of getting used to - and Remote Setup Problem

Moved house recently and involved having to go with UPC. At least its cheaper than our old Sky + Eircom setup.

However, the Sky guide is soo much better.

UPC is very chunky looking, for a device that's HD enabled you'd expect the graphics to be better. Really miss the small mini-TV that Sky had on the top right hand side of the guide (HD box).

Anyway, I've tried all the codes for my LG TV remote control, including the one that I had used previously for the Sky box (0208) and no joy.

With Sky, I could change TV channel with the Sky remote without pressing TV. There were also a few combinations I could use for other functions, eg TV and Help would switch source input. Are there similar combinations for the UPC remote?

But back to the volume issue, the UPC volume controls the UPC box volume (which appears to be just a slider that increases/reduces the volume up to the TVs current setting - it has no effect on a HD channel). If I pres TV before using the volume button, the TV switches to a blank screen, but then the remote does change the TV volume. Its then necessary to press the UPC button to use the guide/change channels etc.

This is annoying, but its something I don't know if I should look into fixing as maybe it just won't do it as the old Sky one did? Am I looking for something thats not there???????

Finally, why don't they group channels like SKY do? And replace the SD channels with the HD ones instead of leaving them all over the place. At least Sky moved RTE2 SD etc down to the end of the guide for HD subscribers.

Worry ye not. In Q1 of next year UPC's new box Horizon will be debuted on these shores. It's already live in Holland and has its own thread here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056579482&page=5
By the looks of it it will blow Sky's box out of the water. Though we will have to wait and see.

It's a known issue. I had a technician come out and first change box (losing my recordings) and then tell me it was the fault of my television. It's only an issue with HD channels with Dolby Digital audio. Setanta Sports HD and RTE 2 HD aren't affected.

The technician programmed my remote to change the audio with the UPC remote but I have never bothered using this.

According to another poster on here the fault is a software issue on UPC's part.

AS you know you can use the UPC remote to change the volume on your TV and UPC box. To get around the fault of it turning off the set top when you press TV and vice versa I turn the remote into my hand, cover the IR, press TV and turn up the sound. To turn up the STB sound I do the same and press UPC button.
If you're using the black HD remote you can change the source by pressing the page down/Av button (the small double arrow button under the OK Button) in TV mode you go to the source you want and then press the + on volume to accept the setting.
I hope the Horizon box and remote will address these little niggles.
