Spark plugs difficult to unscrew

So tried to change the plugs at the weekend but when I tried to open the plug rather than being tight for the first turn or two and then being able to unscrew them by hand, the plugs (I tried two different plugs both did the same thing) were very stiff and difficult to turn for the entire length of the thread that I unscrewed them for, both screwed back in fairly easily and tightened without issue.

I didn't unscrew the plugs the entire way as I was worried something was wrong.

It's my first time trying to change the plugs since I changed car, but I have previously changed them on my previous car without issue. I was opening them in the correct direction according to the service manual - anticlockwise.

Anybody experienced this before without it being a cross threaded plug?

That sounds like a build up of carbon to me. If you were able to unscrew them they should be ok. You are more likely to cross thread when you tighten.

I usually have the engine a little warm when removing the plugs. Examine the plug thread and either clean or replace.

And a tiny smear of copper grease on refitting, makes the job easier next time.
