i have a yearold heifer scouring or skittering what ever you like to call it, shes out on grass along with others, they are dosed twice with animec super in the last 8 weeks, and this particular heifer i gave her a dose do the throat for fluke aswell, but animec super should cover that too.
its pure watery stuff thats coming out of her and doesnt seem to be thriving like the rest. shes eating well
what can i give this heifer to clear it up
i was thinking about putting her into the shed along with another 1 and feeding abit of hay.
what do you guys reckon, im gonna give the vet a call in the morning see what he recommends.
    thanks

This has been a dreadful year on all animals. There could be a number of reasons but without seeing the animal I would be looking at
    1. possible extremely high level of stomach worms. This can cause irration in the bowel wall causing scouring. Frequent dosing .....less than 3 weeks apart and move to clean pasture to try and reduce infestation. egg count would answer this.
2.This I feel could be more likely be the problem, stomach fluke, this is the time infestation shows up and more so with a problem in young animals.oxyclozanide is the only effective drug . this is found in Zanil or levfas diamond . I think Osmonds do something similar .IF this is the case response to dose is quiet quick. note it can be severe on animals
    3. there could be other issues but this could only be done by a visit from your vet .

Have you checked her for copper deficiency?

thanks for the info lads, i put her and another heifer in this morning gave her 2 of them powders in the yellow packets mixed in water + 10ml of betamox + another dose of zanil. id have to say this evening id say there is a change in the dung, its still fairly skittery but seems to be not a watery. i will keep giving her the powders for a few days and see what happens. shes eating hay at the minute aswell

    Yellow Powders are probably Sulfadimidine.

At a year old should you still be keeping coccidocis in mind??

    Vecoxin.
I'm no expert but love giving my opinion so hear goes :)

My understanding of the sulpha powders were for "stomach ailments" and the like. My fear is that they may mask your actual problem termpoary and let any condition continue untreated. If she's not responding well I'd be soon thinking that the vet is required.
Don't get me wrong I don't ring the vet at every sign of something wrong. But when an animal is affected to the point of noticeably not thriving like the others I feel it's time, if not past time to get the vet.

The longer it goes on the more chance she won't gain back the condition which ultimately costs more in the long run than a call out.

few days indoors and bit of hay may do her the world of good

@bbam cheers i will see what happens over the next few days.

@vanderbadger, shes in since yesterday morn on the sulphate powders and eating hay.

my uncle told me about a remedy an old vet used to have, a spoonful or 2 of jeyes fluid in milk, down the throat.

    Jeyes Fluid!
It's the knackery you'll be calling rather than the vet. And then theres the issue if what's being introduced into the food chain.

Well I just throw my hat at it at this stage!! I'm reminded of a post on here a few weeks back, espousing with great certainty the merits of using calpol to calm down a wild animal! Just to get them loaded and off to the mart you understand!!
You don't have to go to darkest Africa to find voodoo it would appear.

    Perhaps he meant "Gaseous Fluid"?
The two were often confused, with fatal consequences.

The above link should bring back some memories , especially to older
    farmers.

well thats almost 2 days in now on hay + 4 sulphate powders in her over the past 2 days, its getting thicker for sure, glad to see
it might be a good idea for me too keep this heifer in now for the winter rather than letting her back out to the wet grass in a few days if shes fully better

those yellow sachets were probably SURPHAR NO 2 powders- id continue these with norodine for 3days to prevent rapid weight loss
