See below from Killarney GC's Facebook page, pretty drastic step.

    Killarney Golf Club
From the 17th September the 11th and 12th holes on our Lackabane course will be de-commissioned. The course will remain in use as a 16 hole course. When playing the course, please proceed from the 10th green directly to the 13th tee box. Please follow the signs that are in place:)

Killarney Golf Club We hope to have Lackabane re-instated as a full 18-hole course in 2013. Nothing has been confirmed at this point but look for an announcement in the coming months:)

Pity. The 11th was one of the best holes on the course even though it was next to the factory. Thats the price of progress I suppose.

Has the land been taken back by the factory?

Is there room there to build 2 new holes?

The 11th and 12th were my 2 favourite holes on the course,
the 11th was taken a good while back-they had reduced it to a short par 3 over the lake.
the 12th was a glorious driving hole, will miss it:(

Isn't this land owned by Leibherr ? I heard they want the land back now.

( of course that could be rumour junction )

Yes Leibherr bought the course off Killarney GC. Heard noting that they want the land back in full. They just are extending the factory by the 11th and 12th.

The whole course has recently been sold to liebherr. the club have leased back he course for the next 5 yrs.
Cant see where the 2 new holes will go.
Pity 11 and 12 are going as they are probably the best holes on the course.
But killarney needed the money so had to sell

I suppose the only place where there is room for 2 holes would be the driving range! and i cant see them putting them out there.
they could make some kind of par3 out of the pitching green over near the driving range and maybe convert 1 of the par 5's into a par 3 and a par 4??
whatever they do the whole thing is a pity

5 years is a very short term lease for a golf club I would have thought?

Was in Killarney yesterday and heard that the 1st and 2nd holes in Lackabane may also be going. That will make it difficult to get a decent 18 from the rest of the course. Not confirmed yet but strongly rumoured to be true. Will definitely be a lack of something!

Rumours are around about 1st and 2nd. Course will slowly be going and going id say. Probably down to a 9 hole course for the hotels liebherr own

also heard that the driving range could be going aswell,
wasnt crazy on lackabane but i'll still miss the place, still it might benefit the 2 other courses

I wouldn't foresee any way back for Lackabane, I think this is the first of a gradual closure, it was a millstone around the neck for Killarney G&F Club, Liebherr's cash will have the club back on an even footing and just running two courses should help it to make money again.

Heard yesterday that course is closing end of Oct, suppose its right. why should they throw money at something if its going to be gone soon.

you heard right jtown, just copied this statement from the club website......

    Important Notice - 26th September 2012
It is with regret that I inform you of the closure of our Lackabane course from October 28th 2012. While the course will close indefinitely, the Golf Academy will remain open for business.
This is a decision made by the board of directors of Killarney Golf Club Ltd. This decision was not made lightly but it is in the best interest of the long-term future of the facility. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you sincerely for your patronage of Lackabane and I thank you for your continued support.
    Sincerely,
    Maurice O'Meara

Will this be better for the club in the long run?

Just being able to focus on the 2 courses. What do the members think I wonder?

I always liked Lacabane especially the greens but if it's gotta go it's gotta go, hopefully Mahony's and Killeen will benefit and subs won't rise too much. What they need to do also is attract more members and try to keep existing members.

Subs cant got up. They have sold Lackbane now. They have decided not to keep the course going, so they should have more money. The AGM should be fun with all this happening without discussing with the members

    Is it open for membership?

I think I remember something on here in the past about €2,000 a year. Having access to 3 courses would surely have been a selling point to attract new members. €2,000 might be steep with only 2 courses on offer
