CPU usage question

    Hi everyone,

I recently started using a Nintendo DS emulator called DeSmuME, it is known as being CPU intensive and sure enough when it's running my CPU is running at between 60%-75%, averaging about 68%. The fan kicks in after a few minutes use.

So am I in danger of overheating if I run this emulator regularly for a couple of hours at a time?

    I'm using:
    Toshiba Satellite Laptop
    Win7 64
    8GB Ram
Intel Pentium CPU B960 2.20GHz (Dual core)
    Integrated Graphics

It's the most recent build of the Emulator, 64bit compliant, uses both cores of the processor (i.e on Task Manager, some older emulators don't). The laptop is on a desk in a fairly well ventilated room with no obstructions by the fan. So I think I can't do much more to prevent overheating other than by getting a cooling pad (if necessary).

As you can probably tell I'm a bit paranoid about overheating, this is as I had one of the dodgy HP Pavilion laptops that had the Nvidia overheating problem. That would heat up very quickly (and died) despite never really being taxed at all (after 3.5yrs so I done OK by their standards).

Thanks in advance for any advice.

No. Your computer is designed to run at 100% CPU usage (i.e. both cores going full whack) indefinitely once the laptop is properly ventilated in a room that isn't hot.

If you're really worried you could keep an eye on the temperatures reported from the cores. The Tmax (i.e. max temperature that the CPU can safely operate at) is reported on the intel site.

    Great stuff, thanks Khannie.

I'll probably install SpeedFan or some such to keep an eye on it if I feel it's getting too hot.

    Cheers.
