Root canal price

My son needed to have a Root canal treatment and was given a price of €500. Unfortunately his dentist could not access the root, she managed to clear out the infection, only charged €90 and then referred him to a specialist. The specialist booked him in and has now sent an estimate for €750 !
Has anyone else had a similar experience and would it be worth his while shopping around. He is quite willing to drive up North if necessary. I am presuming that Social Welfare will not cover a RCT.

Social will not cover a RC, €750 is a good price for a specialist (my last one was €900).

He may need 2 or more trips up north, any savings you make initially will be quickly eroded by going to belfast 2 or 3 times with fuel, holidays from work etc.

The other option is to get the tooth extracted but it's always preferable to keep the tooth.

Thanks a million Heli, sound advice. I made a few calls and it is not a bad price and he gets to keep his tooth. Cheers

If you were referred to a specialist then its a difficult one. If you want to take a risk and have it done by a general dentists thats your choice however it may not turn out well and be a big waste of money. A endodontist in the north will charge the same as down south, so what your really saying is that your willing to pay to have the job done by somebody who is cheap rather than good.

Some general dentists are excellent at root canal, however they tend not to be the cheap ones.

    100%?

Yep PRSI only covers an exam now, and med. card holders an exam and two extractions iirc?

You can get "exceptional" treatment with a med card, but it requires approval from the DSP
