Maximum amount of Replays

    Hi,

I was just pondering how many replays would be allowed to settle a fixture,

I know the Dublin v Meath game in the early 90's had a good few and more recently a Club Championship game between Balyboden and Crokes went to three games altogether.

Just putting it out there, good to hear some thoughts

In theory, it's an infinite number of replays. In practice, who knows.

I like it the way it is, prefer extra time/replays to say penalties in soccer. Completely rubbish way of deciding a match,

Yeah i suppose it will never go on past a 2nd replay in practice.

I do agree that penalties is a harsh way to settle a tie, and we certainly cannot go back to flipping a coin after full time.

however when fixtures have to be fulfilled, esp with time and logistical contraints(eg world cup) its hard to argue with penalties.

In GAA we are lucky that games are spread out over a number of months to allow repalys

    ? Dublin-Meath went to a 3rd replay.

Wasnt there a minor football championship match between Laois and Westmeath in the 90's that went to 3 replays.

I think matches in general should be decided with a coin toss.Offaly would have a much btter chance of winning then.:D

There's no provision for penalties are any other nonsense like that. You play until there's a winner and rightly so.

It mightn't be a bad idea if they tried something in the O'Byrne/Walsh Cup to settle draws.Perhaps 5 frees from the 45/65 for each team and see who wins.It might generate a bit of interest and it would be a proper test of skill and nerve which is what the match itself is supposed to decide

Don't they do something similar in rugby if it's tied at the end of extra time.

They do.The take kicks from the 22.Martyn Williams missed one for Cardiff Blues one year and led to them being knocked out of the Heineken Cup.I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to try in GAA it certainly would be exciting

Perhaps in the Walsh/McKenna/Byrne etc., but would you advocate extending it to Championship?

It all depends on how much the GAA would want to avoid excessive replays.I think it could be used if a replay isn't settled after extra time.I wouldn't have an issue with it as it is a test of skill and the team with the more skilful footballers/hurlers and mental strength would win through.
