VICE Documentaries

Has anybody ever watched a VICE documentary or travel show?

The VICE documentary model is difficult to explain. It's relatively low budget, lacks impressive editing and special effects, has a sort-of no-bullshit approach to the topics being covering, it's gritty and real, not concerned with appeasing corporate sponsors or the demands of a network, and, most of all, the presenters are often quite brave, placing themselves into situations that can sometimes be described as incredibly stupid, yet highly entertaining and often very informative.

I thoroughly enjoy the documentaries, though there is one caveat: the presenters. They're what could only be described as hipsters. You'll have to watch a few to get a feel for what I mean. Still, though, the shows are often well worth watching, despite the presenters sometimes being quite annoying.

All of their documentaries, travel shows and informative pieces can be found on their Youtube channel, on this playlist. They have more documentaries on Youtube that aren't listed there, you'll have to search around Youtube to find links.

To give you a taste, I'd recommend watching The Cannibal Warlords of Liberia, Conflict Minerals, Rebels and Child Soldiers in Congo, Bride Kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan, and perhaps Life or Death in the Gaza Strip.

It's important to note that their documentaries are often not for the squeamish or easily upset, as they often cover a controversial or upsetting subject manner, and in doing so don't try to distort the reality of the situation to make the documentary more comfortable to view.

Found this on the suggested videos list on Youtube a while ago, clicked on the documentary and have loved the channel since.

I watched the "Teenage Heroin Epidemic" documentary is very good, tough to watch at times but very good. Another good one is the "how to get away with stealing"..

Trying to not to burn myself out watching them though :pac:

Yeah that one is hard work. Excellent documentaries. I know what the OP means about some of the presenters. There is one doc on youtube about chernobyl and the presenter ruins it. A terrible attitude.

I just watched this last night — what a crazy idea for a documentary! Very unusual, and perhaps slightly sensationalist, but nonetheless entertaining and interesting. Romney having a connection — if a tenuous one at that — to such a world is fascinating. I wonder if remarks regarding his heritage will begin to become more common over the next few weeks with the presidential election beginning to heat up. It'll be interesting to see.

Just finished watching this. Wasn't overly impressed. Watched the teen heroin one, was much much better!

I've been watching loads of these over the last 3 weeks and I think they are brilliant. Last night I watched the one about the north Korean labour camps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awQDLoOnkdI - I really like the Canadian guy in it he's cool - but some other presenters are awful. The one where the hipster guy who looks like Marilyn Manson goes to the amazon to do a weird drug. pretty weak overall.

The one on SOFEX is good too, and they have lots of good ones on drugs also.
