Need to remove forks this evening ( to take pic of crack around steerer I think) and I have never done it before. Do I just need Allen Keys to loosen from the headset ?

If it is a modern fork, yes, you only need Allen keys. Remember when reinstalling you need to adjust the headset (top bolt) *before* tightening the stem bolts.
