yesterday i went to a local petrol station, pulled up at the pump put down the window and told the attendant to put a fiver in. i then hopped out and went over to him to give him the 5 euro, he was inserting the nozzle into the car at this stage. it was about a minute or so before he was finished or so i assumed, i looked over my left shoulder and watched him leave the pump and he then went into to the shop. i thought ok job done away we go. so i take off and as i get to the end of the next pump (which was in front of me) i hear this noise which i thought was just my wheel clipping the kerb so i drove on but the noise continued so i stopped and got out. next thing i turn around and there is the pump pulled out of the ground lying on its side with petrol spurting out!! the attendant had left the nozzle in the car when he went into the shop because he then said "i needed to turn the pump on", which i was obviously unaware of. at this stage the boss comes out and starts putting all the blame on me. he said not one word to the fella who was supposed to be putting the petrol in. i tried to tell him what had happened but he was having none of it and kept saying i have it on camera, more or less being a complete wanker. i have since become aware that the fella who was putting the petrol in doesnt actually work there at all, which kind of clicked into place because when it had all happened he went over and sat on a wall the whole time the i was there until after i left. he is meant to just hang about the station so the man who owns him lets him put the petrol in when ever he is about, bit of a strange arrangement if you ask me! the boss has now made a complaint to the guards and they called to my house today for a statement. he is looking me to pay the bill for repairs to the pump which i would think will be quite costly. any opinions would be welcomed.

The guard said he would contact me 2 weeks after the superintendent had read all the statements and made a decision. But I never did hear any word back from from either the guards or the owner and he has since got the pump up and working again (although its still in the original banjo'd state I left it). Turns out I was in the right after all! motthhaaafuuccckkkkkaaaassssssss :) !!!

    :D

That's some story mate. If ripping a petrol stand from the ground feels like clipping a kerb, you must be driving a pick-up, or you should not be driving at all.

did this happen in ninties? In fairness it was an easy mistake to make i mean how where you to know he wasn't finished, but the part where you thought you where clipping a kerb and drove on was a bit of a brain fart..

Definitely wont be forgetting it. Nah the pump was more or less just sitting on the ground, it wouldn't have needed much to topple. You could have pushed it over if you wanted and the rest were the same.

Don't worry about the bill, your insurance should cover it.

It certainly seems ridiculous that he had to go and turn on the pump. It's also utterly retarded to leave the pump in the car unattended (even if it is off). Is that even legal? My initial guess would be that the guy worked in the petrol station, but "off the books". A call to Revenue might not go amiss either way -sounds dodgy to me.

The bottom line is, however, that you drove off with the petrol pump still attached to the car, so you're going to take the rap for it.

Its only a small family run service station in Donegal so im sure you can imagine it not going to be up to the standards or size of the likes of a topaz station in Dublin.

To cut a long story short your wrong. Read the whole lot and observe the dates. Nothing ever happened over it :)

the shear amount of ****e you have spouted about the owner of that petrol station is shocking, Im pretty sure if he got his hands on you he would squeeze you like pop eye squeezes a can on spinach. He was never lifted for dodgey diesel ya chancer. Also i have nothing to do with him but i work near by and be in every day, and everyone i know says he is nothing but a gentleman in every way.

If you provide a service, there is a minimum standard of practise that should be upheld regardless of the size or location of your business.

Allowing some randomer who sits on a wall nearby to interfere with business is plain and simple unprofessional. Offer him a job, or get him to leave, but do not have him playing around with customers cars.

This happens all the time, I.e. people drive off with petrol
Pump nozzles in their cars and it usually causes tens of thousands of damage. You have to think that it is not just the cost of replacing / repairing the pump etc, but also the possible business interruption due to lack of use of the pump and resulting loss of sales! Let the two insurers sort it out. Tell the Garcia the exact sequence of events, but ultimately, it will be between the two insurers. It sounds like there is an element of contributory negligence the part of the service station owner which should help reduce the overall cost of the claim
