Getting paid by cheque?

    Hi all,

I started a job over a month ago and as they pay monthly I am only getting paid now. They cashed a cheque into their account but I am a different branch to them so therefore takes longer for the cheque to be cleared.

They cashed the cheque on pay day very late in the afternoon and now I have to wait for the cheque to be cleared which I was told could take 4 - 6 working days. Now I am completely broke, my rent hasn't been paid in nearly 8 weeks, i have no money for food or travel to work.

I am wondering is it right for this to happen? I was under the assumption that pay day meant pay day and that I would be able to take my money out of the bank on that day, rather than having to wait another 5- 6 working days, meaning it could take till next Monday before I have my own money. Am I wrong in this assumption? Or should I ask my employers to cash my cheque a few days before pay day so that the money goes into my account on time?

    Thank you.

Paying by cheque? This usually a sign of cashflow problems or else they business does banking in the stone age. I can understand your frustration.

Maybe ask if there is alternative payment methods as you have weekly expenses to meet i.e rent etc.

I would have thought it unusual for anyone to pay by cheque these days. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Most places I've worked the money is transferred electronically and ends up in your account the next morning/midnight.

I used to get cheques years ago, I asked them to make them out to cash and then I cashed them at the company's local bank branch where they had a letter authorizing them to cash cheques.

Not a Banking issue as such, so I'll move this to Work and Jobs for better advice on how to deal with your employer, and maybe get them to come to a more suitable arrangement for your circumstances.

Probably a bit late now but what you can do is take the cheque to their branch and get it cashed. Had the same problem myself years ago and this is how i got around it.
