First Year English

    Hi everyone,

I'm embarking on the PDE/HDip course (agh!). I'm meeting my first year group later this week. I haven't yet sat down with my co-op teachers to discuss future plans and schemes, but they just said to do my own thing for the first class or two. I'm thinking of doing something on Roald Dahl, as it is Roald Dahl Day on Thursday.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears from Revolting Rhymes was my idea, to have an introduction to poetry and also types of words and that kind of thing. Not sure yet if I'll introduce point of view (although it is very pertinent to this poem) as it might overload things for the first class.

Is Roald Dahl suitable for this group, but possibly not a second year group though? I'm a bit unsure if they'll engage with it, or think it's "babyish". I know this year is meant to be all about experimenting - would just like some advice if it's a goer or not!

    Thanks in advance!

There should be a scheme of work to follow which says which poems, novels etc should be covered for the term.

Go for it. It might go brilliantly. Or they might think it's a bit below their level. But at least you'll know, and you'll be able to incorporate that knowledge in your future planning.

Yeah, there is a scheme of work, but it's not too concrete. Just said for the first class to do my own thing.

    Thanks!

Yeah, you should be able to get a lot out of it. If it's only for the first class, though, I would suggest you stick to one stanza as it's quite long.
