    There was an ISSF rapid-fire pistol built like that in the 50s, but a semi-auto rather than a revolver; had the slide on the bottom and the mechanism inverted. Made by Maroglin:

    It was so effective that they changed the rules for all Olympic pistol shooting after the '56 games so that the barrel line was required to pass above the hand.

    What advantages would that design give?

    Recoil goes straight into the hand instead of over it; much reduced barrel flip as a result.

    Would it be harder to aim though, seeing as the barrel is so much further below the line of sight than with conventional revolvers?
