Toshiba laptop won't charge?

Got a warning on my laptop a couple of weeks ago saying to 'consider replacing battery' and now I notice that it will stop charging and the battery will run down. I thought first that it was the AC connection getting bad but I figured out that if I plug out the charger out of the mains and plug it back in that it will start charging again. Is it a combination of the battery and power supply both wearing out? It's expensive to replace both so if I can get away with buying one it would be handy.

Will it work ok without the battery just plugged into the adapter? See if someone would give you the loan of a known working charger or battery to check it.

About 2 years and it is the orginal power supply.

It will work without the battery if there's power getting to the laptop, but that seems to stop for no reason and then start again. No amount of fiddling with the cable gets it working but plugging it out and in again seems to get it going.
