Can you pay for a motor part over the phone?

And get them to post it up? Has anyone ever paid for a part over the phone? Is it heard of? I paid for my motor insurance by card, anyway.

My story - A couple of days ago, my clutch cylinder broke and I phoned up a couple of companies that sell parts. One asked for my Chassis No. said E120 and I have to order it because it isn't currently in stock. While the other said E70 and just asked for the year of the car after I told them the make. I'm quite inexperienced at this sort of thing because it's my first car so didn't really take any notice to the difference at the time and just went for the cheaper option. The mechanic told me when he came over to fit it, the clutch cylinders are structurally different. The nearest FIAT dealer (I have a Punto) is Limerick (I live in Clare) so would cost me a lot of time, energy and money cycling to the bus-stop, paying a bus-fare when I go to collect the part etc.

I've bought a washing machine and an oven over the phone recently, paid by credit card, as mentioned once they're a reputable business there's no bother.

But as Colm mentioned, often better to let mechanic supply the bits, his problem if they're not correct or whatever than :)

The car is at home not at the garage. But I asked him could the garage get the part for me (can't remember if I 'get' or have' now in hindsight) and he told me no and to ask another local mechanic who does second hand parts, who didn't have it. To be honest, I would be a bit embarrassed if I asked him to order it now.

Will everything be grand anyway as long as I provide the Chassis or Reg No.? All the specifications would show up on a computer so I couldn't go wrong again?

Clare Car & Tractor Parts in Gort Rd Industrial Estate, Ennis. Very nice guys and know their stuff.

Many motor factors around the town, you dont always have to buy straight from dealers.

Thanks very much. I'll try ringing around, but it'll be in more hope than expectation because the car is 12 years old.

I tried paying for a part over the phone last week to a well known garage but the sales guy said that they were no longer doing it as they had been the victim of fraud with stolen cards or card numbers. He said that they were only doing it for customers that they already knew as the garage have to refund the credit card company if its a dodgy sale.

Alot of garages have not had to do this because of fraud, and will only order in parts for people they know

    So I got the part...

And it's wrong. It's a clutch cylinder alright but I specifically told the salesman over the phone it was not threaded and instead shoved in and a clip holds it in place and he said he understood what I was saying. They are simply structurally different. What does he do but order the threaded one. I'm seething, some people are just so incompetent!! This deal is costing me a lot of time and money.

Now I'm unsure about my next course of action because I have no receipt as it was ordered over the phone... hopefully my bank statement would do in case they act thick with me.
