Saorview have added an Accessibility information page to its website recently - http://www.saorview.ie/help-support/accessibility/.

With an approved Saorview PVR expected in early Oct one of the two FAQs relates to recording subtitles
    • Can I get subtitles with SAORVIEW?
Yes, all SAORVIEW Approved equipment, both TVs and set-top-boxes must be capable of displaying subtitles. To access
subtitles, press the “subtitle” or “sub” button on your set-top-box or TV remote control. Usually the text “SUBTITLE” will appear at the top right of the screen when subtitles are on.
    • Can I record subtitles with SAORVIEW?
Currently there are some Approved products that allow recording on an external hard drive. These products are not fully compliant PVRs and do not record subtitles. SAORVIEW is working with manufacturers develop a PVR for SAORVIEW which has an internal hard drive and two tuners. It will be a requirement for this device to record subtitles.

Quite amazing that some of the approved boxes don't record the subtitles even via USB! This is a simple firmware implementation allowing for the box to record the files as MPEG PS files rather than MPEG TS files.

Most of the unapproved boxes do it already.

I am just commenting on unplanned 'features' within the Saorview spec. We have still to see AAC encoding for the audio, series linking for recording, any MHEG5 applications, etc.

Now we have things that should work that do not.

    HE-AAC not plain old AAC.

Thing with the Saorview boxes that Vestel have released, they receive the stations fine, but outside that they are very very basic. The USB ports on some of them only play mp3s. No Divx, XVid/MKV, MP4 support. And no option for recording as a Transport Stream which does records the subs.
