Hi guys, I'm 17 next month and in the market for a car, I have about €1k saved up from doing some work over the summer so that is my max to spend on the car alone, I guessing something with a 1.2 to 1.4 petrol would be suitable for the country roads of west limerick.

Regarding insurance who would you recommend?

    Thanks

Just ring them all and get a long list of quotes. You're going to be paying at least €2k regardless of who you go with.

Could I get put as a named driver under my mother/father?

Only the owner of the car can insure the vehicle. If you own it, then you must be the main driver.... Naming your mother on the policy will help. Also, stick to a smaller engine....you're more likely not to find a policy with an engine size >1.1....

any particular car you'd recommend for around the 1k mark?

To be honest, you're much better off to get insured as a named driver on one of your parents' cars for a year and get a year's experience. This will also give you another year to save up for an even better car.

No matter how small the engine in a car that you buy now, you will be paying at least €2000 to have yourself as the named driver. I'd be very surprised if it's less than that but wouldn't be if it was a lot more.

Go for something around 1.0l such as a VW Polo, Seat Ibiza that kind of thing. A lot of them won't even quote you for a bigger engine.

Fbd are a good insurance company for younger drivers. Buy your car put it in your parents name let them insure it and you get on as a named driver it's the cheapest possible way. Its about 1000 euro to get on as a named driver and if you were taking out your own policy about 3000 at the very least. Go as a named driver specially when your only 17.
