    Hi. I own a 2003 BMW 525d sport, the last of the E39 series. I've just replaced the battery and discovered that while the car is switched off, something is putting a draw on the battery of approx. 3 amps. This would be like asking a mechanic to find a needle in a haystack as (I think) it could be caused by almost anything in the electrics. Has anyone experienced this or can someone suggest a likely cause? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Why not pull each fuse in turn to narrow it down to a particular circuit? You could also post your question on : www.bmw-driver.net

    As above, connect one of those non interference ammeter clamps across the earth lead of the battery and remove each fuse in turn. Any drop in amperage coinciding with a fuse being removed would narrow down the ircuit to be investigated.

    Thanks for your help and suggestions, lads. My mechanic reckons he should be able to sort it without too much grief. Will post the solution when I find it, in case it's any help to someone else. Cheers.

    Do you actually have a problem with the battery being drained, or is it just the 3A that youre concerned about?
    I wouldnt find that draw unusual if youre not allowing the car to be shut down properly.
    Connect up an ammeter and lock the car and it should drop down to 50ish mA within an hour or so.
