It may not necessarily be a bargain to you but for someone who desires this phone it is as it's below the current average retail price. S3's are also quite popular at the moment

Who cares if a new one comes out next year if the S3 still gets Android version updates (which it will).

Very ambiguous statement there. The S3 in all likely hood will not get updates to new versions of Android indefinitely.

While it mightn't get official Samsung updates after some years, it could likely be supported by the community with other ROM updates (eg. Cyanogen Mod, xda-developers, etc.)

The price is relative and bargains are subjective. There's no point in beating this topic over the head.

Thanks for the post OP as I'm sure those interested in a Samsung Galaxy S3, but are reluctant to be tied down to a contract, will find this useful ;)

    Proud of it, too. :D

In fairness, with all technology as soon as you buy it you know it will superseded almost immediately by something better. The android community allows the opportunity to extend the life of your phone beyond the stock support by the Manufacturer.

Most other irish outlets appear to be selling the Galaxy S3 for about €569-€599, so buying one for €480 would be a 'bargain' ... relatively speaking.

They seem to be very popular on adverts.ie those days

    Unwanted upgrades and all that

I used that code on the S3 about a week ago, billpay upgrade, 12 month contract, for €175. It also came with a Galaxy S Pebble MP3 player.

O2 haven't a clue. Before I bought the phone I had seen this deal on the site. I got a call from O2 offering me upgrade options and the upgrade price they offered on the S3 €329. When I told them about the €175 deal on the site they said I would get an error when I tried to pay for it. I tried and it worked no problem.

BTW - In the T&C's the 20% only applies to upgrades at weekends.
You can transfer music from the phone to the player... nice feature.

    What code is that dazzy?

Its the first link in the first post above. Its an upgrade code so it SHOULD only work with upgrades. You get a text after entering your details with the code.

I was looking at buying an S3 through adverts.ie or ebay - but they seem to go for over €400 second hand - so being able to get this one for under €480 looked great. I'm not an o2 customer (am with tesco mobile) so I went and bought an o2 sim. Got the code, ordered the phone and the order went through without a hitch. Thanks OP.

most "second hand there could be unopened.. there is someone complaining in android forum they bought a blacklisted one and asking for a way around it (which there isnt unless you go live outside europe) so yeah. maybe this offer is best bet

Are O2 handsets compatible with other O2 associated networks like Tesco, Lyca, etc.?

Easy to unlock for free - I'd be rooting it anyway.

    true, but:

they can give you unlocking code as soon as you register it and topup by total of e150 - with usual e20 a month (that you need anyway to keep free calls & texts) it is less than 8 months

or - if you don't care about your warranty - you can unlock it yourself

What I can understand here is that warranty lapses if one unlocks in unauthorized way.

Sorry, could you elaborate here? What do you mean by "blacklisted"? And why would S3s on adverts.ie be blacklisted? Sorry if a stupid question, just interested as am considering buying one myself

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,384 ✭✭✭emo72

not sure what blacklisted means. assuming it means stolen and blocked? you can buy safely from adverts. bought a few myself from there for friends, unlocked them and rooted. very easy.

yeah basically theres 2 things. someone gets their phone stolen. phone company goes grand. we will block it.
the minute it shows up on another network or somewhere again no matter the sim card it gets blocked. its useable for apps etc but can never connect to a network again until returned to the company that blacklisted it.
or someone claims its stolen to get insurance claim or a new phone and tries selling it. phone gets blocked same as above

but blocks do take like 2-4 weeks afaik... either way, risque..

for the most part ull be grand buying off adverts.. id just make sure u have a contact method to the person in future like call to collect it at their address etc...then u know they wudnt be doing it illegally, rather than a trade off at a random location (or take their car registratino for comfort)

How does 10% off 580 equate to a price of 480? That price sounds great but I can't figure out how to get it. Anyone?

It was 20% off, and the original price was €599 - so it came in at just under €480.

This can be bought unlocked for €495 from amazon.de

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,369 ✭✭✭chabsey

Think they're 475 on Amazon.de but probably about 20 quid shipping. Annoying that the 20% offer is gone.

What's really annoying is that Amazon Uk warehouse deals has them about 350 sterling, but they don't ship phones to Ireland, even though Amazon itself does.
