I am named driver under my dads insurance. Now that I am looking to take out an insurance policy of my own I am not entitled to any 'no claims bonus'. Is this fair? I have been driving for 3 years and have never had an accident.

Some insurance companies give a half year for every full year you are a named driver, you could try shopping around?

No claims bonus can only be earned under your on name on your own policy. Some companies will recognise your named driver experience for a small discount but you haven't earned any no claims bonus.

I just got insurance with Liberty using 4 years named driving for €640. 21 years. Was quoted for €850 first but got it down. They recognised the named experience.

ok... The fact of the matter is that I am not entitled to a 'no claims bonus'. I realise that.

But is it fair that I get no recognition for 3 years without an accident. Surely 3 years driving, is 3 years driving... regardless of what insurance I'm under.

If youre a named driver then youre not supposed to be using the car full time, and therefore, in theory anyway, wont have 3 full years of driving in that time. As a named driver you might only have only used the car twice a year in that time as it is not supposed to be your car. Its not your policy and you dont have an entitlement to any benefits that come from it.

As has been said shop around as there are some insurers who take named driving experience into account.

But thats not what the bonus is for.. The bonus is a discount for not having a claim on YOUR insurance policy.. Whoever owned that policy gets a discount (or maintains their max discount) becuase you didn't claim.

The discount is being handed out, just not to you because you didnt own the policy..

As per other posters advice check around, some companies will take your 3 years into account.

Fair enough.. I suppose this is understandable. Also, does anyone know if insurance prices drop whenever I turn 21? I suppose it all depends on my driving experience as opposed to age?

    At 21 no.

I've been insured since I was 18 and I've never noticed a noticable drop due to age (I'm 23 now). Until recently that was all UK insurance (which you will be on if you are in Newry). I think the age thing is a bit of a myth.

You will still have high insurance costs at 21, especially if this is the first policy in your name. I'd be surprised if it were lower than the high hundreds.

Cheers, I guess I will just have to bite the bullet and pay the cost... I will have to do it sooner or later.

Count yourself lucky, i've just got off the phone with Quinn Direct and they have just give me a quote of £6800 for gti golf. Im 30 years of age, have had a full licence for 6 years, built up a 5 years no claims which expired because i haven't had a car for a while. Now i have to start all over again :(

(sorry i know this doesn't help you, i just needed to have a rant about car insurance)
