my first wild boar

i went on a recent hunting trip to Sweden at the end of august to a friend
for some wild boar hunting and roe buck if i wanted
i was really keen on trying to get a boar as a previous trip to czech republic was unsuccessful even though i bagged a nice roe buck
i arrived in stockholm on the thursday morning where my mate met me and we headed for his house.. and stopped off to feed the high seats
when we got home he showed me pictures from his trail cameras... there was a lot of boar coming to his high seat the last week... with 3 or 4 groups coming most nights at various time from half 9 to 3 or 4 in the morning
and even a badger which i could shoot if i wanted but id no interest

i was very excited seeing them in the pictures.. and he explained to me what type animal etc could be shot if it was a sow with young you cant shoot the sow only the piglets... if its a group all the same size which would be last years yearling i could shoot anyone i wanted
there was a black and white yearling in one of the groups and this was the one he wanted me to really shoot as there supposed to be black like the one i shot

anyway after chilling out for a few hours and watching wild boar fever 3 to get in the mood :D we headed off for the high seat about 8 oclock we would have to be there for a while beforehand so as not to disturb the boar while there on route to the high seat
we got in the seat about half 8... the trail camera was telling us the first group was coming at half 9 and on the button two yearlings came at that time one black and white one and one black one...you could see them clearly as it was still fairly bright and the one with the white stood out easily
they burst the undergrowth out of it and my heart started pounding like mad with excitement... they snorted the air like mad and moved around
and could sense us there and bolted before actually getting on the feeding spot..
thank god they did as i would of probably missed with the excitement :D
anyway we sat there quietly for about another 45 minutes when a sow with piglets came... its illegal to use lights when hunting boar in sweden so getting a shot at the piglets was very tough as i couldnt make them out could only hear them and barely make them out on the ground
they stayed for around half an hour before heading on

a while later at 11 to be exact two more yearling came they were under us before we knew it they came very quietly to the feeding spot and was about 35 meters away... by this time the moon was high and the forest floor was bright i could see the boar no problem my friend glassed them just to make sure and told me to shoot whatever i wanted
i covered the first one that came in my scope and shot it though the shoulder exactly where my friend said to do so i was pure calm when shooting all thanks to the first boar to be honest

as soon as i fired my friend put on the flashlight incase it ran and it did
it was gone so fast we didnt even see it
we got down from the high seat and went to the feeding spot
i found a blood trail and i was on it like a flash with excitement but my friend called me back incase it would charge me... we then followed the trail together my friend with the rifle ready i followed it about 25 metres and my friend then decided to call his friend with the tracking dog just incase its not badly hurt and will travel good distance before going down
his friend arrived at 12 midnight
it took the dog a few minutes to get the right scent as there was so much boar after been in the area eventually when he found the right one he was moving very fast he went in the same direction that i had taken with the torch we then found the boar dead under a tree about ten meters past where we had stopped searching
it was a 65kg sow and one year old

there one hardy animal i was after shooting it with a .300 winchester magnum and it still went that far

after making so much noise with the tracking dogs barking etc i didnt get another boar after... as we had made to much racket my friend had hoped id get 3 in the 3 nights i was there i was more than happy with the one
i only went out one evening after the roe deer but had no luck
we also came across a good few moose with young they seem very plentiful over there

anyway it was a great few days
high seat shooting was something i never really though was difficult but it poses a lot of other difficulties that stalking doesnt
ya need a lot of patience .. no the terrain unbelievably well ie winde direction boar direction scent etc
anyway heres a few pics im sick of typing :)

Hey Daithi good read. Well done it sounds like a great few days alright. Bore are suppose to be dangerous enough ****ers if they charge you, it's mad how you think when the adrenaline is pumping.
