Yet another Portfolio....

Thought I'd give it a name to differentiate it from the others. :)

I might as well create this while things are going well for my portfolio (Friday was one of my best ever days)! I usually divide my portfolio into two different categories as the strategies are different. All stocks were bought in the last three months; I'm new to this whole thing and have had a bit of beginner's luck so far.

    Non-oil exploration

Mostly my strategy was based on buying stocks which should do very well when the economy does well, as I'm reasonably optimistic about that. Aound the time I started investing, many stocks (particularly large cap) were at 52-year lows; I was trying to avoid the beginner's mistake of buying high, selling low, so I focused on cheap stocks which I thought would recover with the economy or for other reasons.

    SIE (Siemens)

At the time I bought, I thought that EU problems had already being factored into the price, and the global nature of Siemens' business should balance that out. However the share price struggled after I bought and that continued when they reported less than expected Q2 profits. Since then they have recovered and are doing very well for me.

    Buy Price: €65.12 (June)
    Current Price: €77.69
    Profit: 18.97%

    TEF (Telefonica)

Not a good buy in hindsight due to the big debt load, but has done well for me; will probably sell soon anyhow.

    Buy Price: $12.52 (August)
    Current Price: $14.22
    Profit: 13.60%

    YNDX (Yandex)

My baby. :) Russian's answer to the Google Search Engine. Up 35.08% in a couple of months. And a lot of potential to go higher. I'm always keeping an eye on their market share in Russia and it seems quite stable. I was hoping they would expand into other services to mirror Google even more; adding online storage recently is another step in that direction.

    Buy Price: $16.99 (June)
    Current Price: $22.95
    Profit: 35.08%

    FLR (Fluor)

Very economy-dependant engineering company who also struggled in the period after I bought them but have improved since with the economy as a whole.

    Buy Price: $47.12 (June)
    Current Price: $53.66
    Profit; 13.88%

    GMCR (Green Mountain Coffee Cups)

They have patents running out, which I hoped had already being taking into account in the share price when I bought them. I was confident they will keep reporting high profits and they've done well for me lately. Like Telefonica, I'll allow them to ride out the current rise in the economy and then probably sell, as I'm not confident about the long term.

    Buy Price: $20.30 (June)
    Current Price: $25.73
    Profit: 26.75%

Most of the shares above do very well when the market indices do well and struggle when they don't. They are those kind of shares. A big market rally in the last few weeks have seen those shares do very well.

    Oil Exploration:

USOP (US Oil & Gas, plc.) (June)

A risky play which a huge percentage of my overall portfolio is tied up in. It's also my best performer, and nothing but good news since I bought in. I didn't dream of these profits when I first invested, but of course they aren't profits until I sell. Like many other people, waiting for those flow results this month. Has the potential to make me a rich man and make my other shares irrelevant; or lose me a lot of money. I'm confident about this one though, and if it doesn't work out, I'm young enough to learn from my mistakes.

    Average Buy Price: £2.55
    Current Price: £6.25
    Profit: 245%

    SMB (Simba Energy) (August)

The only share I have which is currently down - very long term though so I'm not too concerned.

    Buy Price: $0.13
    Current Price: $0.10
    Loss: -23%

Where are you getting -76% from ? Something badly wrong with your trading platform if it's showing those figures.

What trading platform are you using?

Sharewatch.ie which uses FXCM.co.uk as the trading platform.

USOP was bought through Campbell O'Connor; not online.

GMCR had a great day on Friday, up 13.22%, the biggest gainer in Nasdaq. It seems to be on the back of plenty of buy recommendations from various analysts (in contrast to sell recommendations a couple of months ago) along with a high volume of purchases by insiders, instilling confidence in a period when some important patents are running out. They also launched some new products the day before, which they need to do to make up for possible future profit losses in their main area.

Simba Energy up from $0.115 to $0.14 or 21.74%. Hopefully that means some good news soon. They are using Passive Seismic IPDS (USOP's Karim Akrawi was involved but left) to look for oil in Onshore Kenya, and other African countries.

I sold Telefonica for a tiny profit; their debt is very high. Looking for another company to buy into.

It's a difficult one and unfortunately I don't have the answer. What I will say is the share price is either going to go way up or way down fairly soon, so the current share price isn't that important (in terms of whether you will make a decent profit or not). Obviously you won't make as much as people who got in earlier, but the risk is similar. If you think the oil will flow commercially (do your own research on that :D) and it does, you can still potentially make a good profit regardless of the current share price.

I thought I was getting in too late at £2.49 and £2.60. But all good so far.

Yeah It's hard to know , I am new to all this . In terms of researching it I wouldn't know where to start !!
I was thinking of putting in a couple of k , but still undecided !!

    Thanks for the help :)

Would love some further commentary from the OP on his portfolio in last few weeks.

After reading the list I followed GMCR closely enough but thankfully didnt put any cash into them as they have tanked in last few weeks after star bucks deal.

Find these posts really interesting to see the posters current outlook

Yeah GMCR collapsed in a few days. I'm still in profit and strongly considering selling. All my stocks took a hit in that period but all (except GMCR) recovered. Haven't re-invested in other stocks yet, waiting to hear about USOP's flow results first.

YNDX (46.62% profit), FLR (26.51%), and SIE (19.47%) are still doing well. Simba (-1%) are stable pending news. Yandex released a browser and cloud storage solutions so they are trying to expand which is good.

Have to admit I'm mostly occupied by USOP which is why I haven't updated this thread much about the other stocks. :)

I sold GMCR a few days ago with a tiny profit. I could have made a decent profit if I'd sold a week earlier, as it went from 30 to 22 in the meantime. I'm still learning this game, it probably wasn't a great buy (like Telefonica) I'm just happy I sold out before I had to learn the hard way. Both of those stocks are down since I sold them but so are most of the others.

Simba has gone up to C$0.155 following the release of this investor presentation.

    http://www.simbaenergy.ca/data/presentation/files/Simba%20KENYA%20Oct%202012_Final.pdf

I'm still trying to go through and understand all the information in there. Very early stages. I'm still learning, hence the amounts of money involved are not huge.

Obviously all of this pales in comparison to what will happen my portfolio once USOP release the results of their workover program (good or bad).

I'm really tempted to invest in Greenland Minerals also.

    Hi Primal Nut,
I haven't been so excited about a stock as I am with GGG.

Current SP is at the 30c placement price and I expect there to be some overhang with the share price until their SPP is closed this Friday.

Have you seen yesterday that Tullow Oil have farmed-in to an exploration block in Greenland?
Oil exploration in Greenland hasn't gone that well to date with $1.2bn spent in recent years yielding no significant discovery.

The Greenland Government can't afford to not invest in the Kvanefjeld project and so I fully expect the Uranium ban on mining to be lifted very soon...

The director is quite positive too and has spent over $170k of his own money buying stock on the market at 30c

Are you still holding GMCR? Laughing all the way to the bank if so

It looks like he sold GMCR in Ocotber for a small profit (it's at $75 now). The other shares have done quite well except for USOP and SMB. However it looks like USOP was by far his biggest investment.

    A few q's about sharewatch:
    1. Do you take ownership of shares, or is it only spread betting?
    2. What capital requirements are there? e.g. balance in a/c, minimum share purchase etc.
    3. Does it take long to set up an a/c with them? Do you need to send them loads of details?
    4. All relevant fees - fees per share purchase, monthly fees etc.

    Thanks in advance.
