Sky for 12 months instead of a Saorview box?

    Hi All

Apologies if this has been asked before but I cannot find it.

At the moment I have a free to air/freeview satellite (I am not sure what the difference is or which one I have to be honest) working with a 10 year old Sky box. I also have an analogue aerial for the home channels. So I know that the analogue aerial will be no good come 24 October. One option I have is to but 2 Saorview set-top boxes for the 2 TVs that we have and then go on as normal with the freeview. If I was to get Sky for 12 months and get 2 Sky+ boxes then cancel the subscription after 12 months, I have 2 new boxes but will I still be able to get the home channels through the Sky box without a subscription.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Christy

No. With a Sky box you need an active card/subscription to get the Irish channels.

Thanks for the quick reply. It looks like a couple of Saorview boxes are my answer so.

Others on here would know about this than I would.....

Since you were thinking of paying a Sky sub for the year just to get a new Sky box, you could get a combo box. Connect one side to your aerial to get the Irish channels and the other side to your existing Sky dish to get the UK channels.

It means you only have 1 remote and all the Irish/UK channels are available from one menu. (Rather than having to switch back & forth from a saorview box to a sky box.)

Plus there is some limited recording available to a USB or external hard drive.

Offical soarview combos: Walker (~€150) or Triax (~180).

Or unoffical: Ferguson Ariva ~ 100+.

If you are used to a Sky box probably best to stay with it.

Saorview boxes are a minimum of 50 euro each. If your TV is over 10 years old it might actually be better long term value to buy a TV with Saorview built in. Depending on the size of the screen the difference may not be much.

As already said signing up to Sky will not work as you plan.
