    Howdy folks

Ive been told my car(05 VW Passat) needs a vaccum pump replacement, which I breathed a sigh of relief as the problem was originally diagnosed as the dmf. After the mechanic talking to his parts group it was coming in at 400 ex vat !! so it is still a fair whack ok cash.

Question is can I get this second hand, or whats the best think to do in this situation . Also how urgent should I be about getting this replaced ? he mentioned that it will lead to inconsistent breaking and having to some time step harder on the breaks .... so I am currently not putting it on the urgent list.

    PPls thoughts ??

By the looks of things, that might not be a bad price at all.

If it was me,I'd get it sorted pronto.

What symptoms are you having? The vacuum pumps give little or no trouble on these cars. The same cannot be said for the brake servo, which will give similar symptoms when faulty.

The last thing you want to do is pay a large amount of cash for a job that doesn't need doing. So make sure the diagnosis is correct before proceeding...

The symptoms was just a knocking noise like something was loose. As I said the noise he initially thought was like an issue with the dmf.

bar the bit of noise not much I can say about it, car seems to be running grand.

Right so thing to do I gather is to talk to the initial mechanic and see how he came to the conclusion that it was the vaccum pump and take it to someone else for a second opinion I gather.

If it its the break servo I gather this ups the seriousness of the situation by many degrees.

With those symptoms it isn't going to be the servo. The usual symptoms with a faulty servo would be a hard brake pedal. I have never seen one of those vacuum pumps making a knocking noise but that is not to say it doesn't happen.
