Saorview Recordings

Is there a knack to doing this right??? I've only played around with it a few times since I got a saorview tv for the bedroom. I wanted to record the hurling final today so I did a few trial runs on different usb sticks yesterday and this morning... Recorded 3 different programs on different channels last night, came out ok. Played back a good few minutes of each program and all seemed fine. Brought that usb to a friends house today, who has a Samsung saorview tv... Anyway, put it in their tv and the usb menu came up with music and photos options only - no sign of my recordings. Popped it in their laptop then and there they were, all 3, but one without sound!
Anyway, came home a while ago and checked did I get the hurling recorded ok - seems to be in 4 parts, around an hour each ... Is there a setting to change recording time lengths? And what would the sound problem be? - The TV was at the same volume for all attempts....
    I'm stumped anyway! :o

There is no one specified way for it to work, it depends on how the manufacturer decided to implement it.

Yes as said you can't generally remove sticks and guarantee they will plan on another TV or PC.

If you want to do that regularly you need to use a box that is known to work ok. Even then many makes of TV will not accept content from other TVs.

DVD recorders are more standardised but there are also problems.

What file format were they recorded as? Your friends samsung tv probably can't play that type of file

    Videos often require particular codecs

It's an implementation of digital rights management. I haven't been able to play Saorview recordings on anything other than the Saorview box. I have Mac & PC, all the programs and nothing could get inti it. I was able to record on my Mac Mini from Saorview with an EyeSat TV DTT/DVB (not SV approved) unit. The recording is great but the reception was crap so I'm sticking with my Saorview box.

The biggest problem I have is recording from the EPG very often clips the end of the program. I think they're from the Dublin Bus school of chronology!

A codec is at its simplist a recipe for how to store the information in the file. The player has to be able to know this recipe in order to decode the file back into pictures AND sound. Sometimes as in this case it can do one but not the other.
As regards the bits missing of the start /end there's usually a special setting that lets you automatically record an extra few minutes either end of the scheduled program time. The norm is five minutes either side but usually you can increase it.
If you have problems playing your files back on your pc/laptops try downloading the vlc player. It plays nearly everything.
Big rule exception are Sony tvs. The system is rock solid until you try to play your files on something else even another Sony tv ... won't work :(

Saorview is transmitted unencrypted - no DRM is being implemented.

The DRM in in the TV set, e.g., Samsung do it for sure, to stop you giving your near-perfect
    digital recordings to friends.
I'm not even sure if two people with the same Samsung TV can swap recordings.

Kind of mean really, as with older recording methods (tapes, DVD recorders) you could record for
someone else if they were not able to manage it themselves.

Guess that's what the RTE player is meant for

Yes. In the settings menu (sorry to be so obvious!).
As for the sound problem, I don't know.

That might be due to the STB you are using.

We would all be best advised to avoid devices that introduce DRM on their recordings.

In fact it is one of the details I would like to see mentioned/highlighted in the specifications or recommendations for devices, but most seem to be unaware of it or avoid mentioning it.

I believe DRM is a property of the HD signal that a broadcaster (not content owner) can switch on or off.

When RTE (or any of the others) are broadcasting totally in HD, they or the movie companies or program owners can demand DRM be turned on. This would at a minimum ensure no copying to our beloved PVRs.

For what it's worth there is a setting in the STB configuration to turn HDCP off ( High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) just in case what saved is somehow related to the HDMI stream

As for looking at the .ts files try media player classic https://ninite.com/klitecodecs/ (note this is the one click install so will hijack default player settings) - I haven't watched through a full file , just a quick test.

Again files are limited to 1 GB so you have to manually open the next one unless you can figure out how the ancillary files work

If you have a set-top-box, try recording from the SCART connector rather than from the HDMI one.
The copy-protection may not be in the SCART signal because it is SD, not HD!

Thanks for your reply, I don't know and as I restored the factory settings earlier. I can't say, restoring the factory settings has worked.
