Buying a Mercedes E200?

Hi I'm looking to change cars at the start of next year, I'm looking at a E200 Mercedes (00-03) Does anybody have any first hand experience with them? How are they on petrol and stuff, how reliable are they? And how much would parts be in the event that I need a part?

I commute a fair distance so the car would be on the motorway 99% of the time

    Any help is great :D

Personally I think it's a nasty car, looks like a taxi and so has no class, they have a reputation for rust and I couldn't ever buy one.

Never heard of them getting rust now, but I'll agree they do look like a taxi

Do a bit of googling, it's commonplace on mercs of that era.

I've owned 5 Mercs. 3 of them E Classes. Loved every one of them. Parts can be expensive. And a MB dealership will want your first born for labour. Be prepared for expensive enough parts costs if something does go, but find a good independent Merc mechanic and you should be ok. I have never driven one of those 1.8 petrol W211s, but the other ones are just superb to drive. Prefer my most recent 01 E220CDI over a top spec 2008 Mondeo I just sold. Must have for me would be leather and auto, a somewhat decent service history should be there also and if Full MB then spot on. If you're commuting a fair distance I would recommend the E220 CDI. Fantastic car for eating up motorway miles.

Terrible car which is why Mercedes started spending so much money again on design and quality prior to the release of the 04/05 model e class. You could try a 5 series or for hassle free driving a well maintained Saab

    How come?

The w210 isn't a good looking car to start with, it happens sometimes with luxury cars. Now some cars can pull it off because of the cachet of having a premium car.
If you go to Europe and see hundreds of them as taxis, it sort of ruins it for you.
If the car was excellent in other areas then you'd forgive this, but IMO that gen e class didn't particularly excel in any area, its interior is awful looking, it's build quality is worse than it should be, they've reached bangeromics price level and are in my opinion a taxi,
If you want something to impress the neighbours, I can't see a w210 doing the trick

Exactly Colm. Qualify your statement instead of just spouting "it looks like a taxi, ergo it has no class"

Have an E200 2lt petrol. It's a 00 and i've owned it for the last 10 years. There is 220k miles on it. I have serviced it 100% according to the book using a good local mechanic. Rust is an issue and it will wear tyres. 35-40 mpg on the motorway. Alot less tipping about. The only major repair items have come recently, master brake cyclinder, clutch & water pump.

Apart from the water pump got all parts from a breakers.

Would I buy again. Yes 100%. As for looks etc - Beauty is in the eye of the beholder:D
