Speed restricter

I am currently driving a 1.4 L Car, I am 21 and my insurance is 750 per year, I am on a student deal with my insurer and I get 3 or 4 cheques back throughout the year with a refund, if I get no claims or penalty points.
I was considering getting a speed restricter in my car that stops me going over 120 kph, as I never drive above the limit. Has anyone any experience in using these things?

Would insurance companies be willing to give me a further reduction if I get this installed in my car? Are they expensive to install? Would this affect my ability to resell my car and/or are they easy to remove?

Your insurance seems beyond reasonable for a 21 year old tbh

ha ha ... it is first time, I hear, that somebody WANT put speed restriction on car, majority want remove it.
Just drive carefully, get use to car, road and speeds, after 4 years, when youll get full NCB, and will use normal car, you may very often go over speed limit, as youll be got use to to restricter.

I think any car modification will rise insurance.

Maybe you shall drive another car.... like these

What's the point in putting 120km/h limiter, if most dangerous speeding is usually done way below that.

You can still drive at 80km/h through housing estate full of kids playing and running which can have fatal consequences, but your limiter will prevent you from doing 160km/h on empty motorway, which doesn't bring any danger at all.

I've read in another thread that Axa will give discounts to have a box fitted which will monitor

    - Your speed
    - Acceleration
    - Deceleration
    - Corner G's

They'll read the information every so often and determine if you're driving is deemed safe enough to give you a discount.

    :eek::eek::eek:
If they installed this in my car, my premium probably would rise about 10 times up ;)

Ask them and post their answer back here.

OP, I'm guessing you are a woman as no guy would get such a low quote at the age of 21 ? €750 is actually very reasonable if you ask me.

For the love of God be happy!! I'm 21 and mine is €1600, on a 2.2 that is. Granted money might be tight if you're in college but christ above don't go putting a limiter on your car!

When I was 19, and got my first car, insurance was about 75 quid per year.

Me thinks your first insurance policy was taken out in a country other than good old Ireland? ;)

    Hahah.

    No, that was in 2001.
Car (Fiat Cinquecento Sporting 1.1 litre - 4 year old) cost me 4,000 euro. Annual insurance premium was 75 euro. Litre of petrol was about 70 cent.

Not in Ireland though, and obviously prices weren't in Euro as it didn't exist yet then, but I converted it to give you a clue.

Would I be right in thinking that £75 was as good as 5 weeks wages then too?

I'm a guy. Although isn't that new European ruling coming in that says insurance companies can't differentiate quotes between ♂ & ♀ ??

    I'm 21 with 4 years NCB and TPFT renewal wasn't even €750

I'm decade older than OP, 7 years NCB in Ireland, 12 years Full DL , and I pay 650 for 2 litre 2006 family car. :(

    Btw
How are insurance companies getting new customers?
Every year, when I try to look around for the best deal all other insurers give me a quote of ~300 euro more than I pay. No one wish to give me few euro better deal and get new customer, who never had any problems on the road.

They can't discriminate between the sexs, so women's premiums will increase to men's levels.

Is it going to become law though, or has it been overruled? Because I still see no nonsense.ie with that add with the guy calling up saying I'm male, 2 points etc. and some insurance adds are saying they will give lady drivers a nice discount.

Will this ruling be retroactive though? If my premium is €750 and a girl of the same age with the same car was €500, will our premiums stay the same, or will her premium go up to €750 ?? Is this ruling only applying to new insurance applicants or will it affect ladies who already have premiums for the past yonks

    I'm 21, just renewed my insurance, fully comprehensive with 4years NCB on a 1.8T...... €760......oh and I'm a guy:D

Shockingly low insurance. At 19 years old, my first premium on a 1.4 was €4,700. Was about €1,700 when I was 21 with 2 years ncb. OP, your insurance is about the lowest I have ever heard for your age. Are you sure your insurer knows you're a bloke? Maybe you sound a bit feminine and they got mixed up? Especially if you're asking about speed limiters.

Female insurance will go up when the law changes at the end of the year. Insurers win again, because male prices won't come down.

Just meant its all relative, what was the average monthly income in Poland compared to the Average monthly income in Ireland at the time ?

    Allright, I got you now.

Average monthly salary in Poland in 2001 was about 500 euro.
As I said - I paid 4000euro for 4 year old small car, 75euro for annual third party insurance. Litre of petrol was about 70 cent.

I don't know how much was average salary in Ireland at that time, but comparing even to now, we have as follows.

75 euro for annual insurance on small modified car for 19 year old in 2001 in Poland was about 15% of monthly average salary.

To make it the same in Ireland at the moment, with average salary at 36k (3k per month), annual third party insurance for 19 year old should cost about 450 euros. We all know it's far from that.
