ok so i advertised a job vacancy where i work, and i asked people to send CVs to a hotmail address, it was all above board but the job has now gone and because i haven't been at work all weekend (i dont work weekends) to reply to peoples emails they have been saying i am scaming them for their personal details to set up credit cards in their name which is soo not true i was never planning to do that!

two people who sent in their cvs are now phoning the police, can i get in loads of trouble for this? i didn't do anything wrong though :(

but there is a huge post going around on facebook "warning" people about me, surely the police won't come to my house or anything as i didn't commit a crime? :/

Did your boss/supervisor ask you to advertise the job? If not, why did you advertise it? You could get into very serious trouble with your employer (assuming you are not self employed).

I don't know about getting in trouble with the law, I mean, if people are complaining to the police about you, they may investigate, but not take any action.

Have you contacted the people who emailed you about your lack-of-response over the weekend? If not, maybe contact them now and explain why you didn't contact them.

i know if worse came to worse and police did come to my house my boss could back me up but i don't want it going that far

    As a rule of thumb, I generally don't trust anything that is a @hotmail.com or a @gmail.com.

How are they saying that you've scammed them and since it's a hotmail address, what is stopping you from logging on and getting their email addresses that way?

Why on earth did you get people to send CVs to a hotmail address? Surely you have a work address? And why can't you get access to your hotmail address at home or at an internet cafe? And with the job suddenly gone, I know I'd think you were a scammer if I had sent you my personal details like that. Your conduct was extremely unprofessional, to say the least.

Are you quite sure people are calling you such names on the internet, or is it just hearsay? If you are sure, get printouts and maybe legal advice would be the way to go, as such allegations can seriously damage your reputation.

because my emails is on a thing called outlook which i don't have on my computer, so i need to be at work to log into it, have tried to log into my work email address and it doesn't let me

because that is the email address my boss gave me to have people send their cvs in to. that is my work address, i didn't find out the job was gone until today when my boss phoned me, as i haven't been in work since 12pm on friday. and they were looking for someone to start asap

yes they are because i'm currently looking at the post online, they are saying i'm going to use their details for fraud :'(

If you gave them a Hotmail address, you can still access it via the Hotmail website. If you do this again, don't use a hotmail or gmail email, use your official work one if you have one. The former smacks of unprofessional and dodginess.

the hotmail account is my work account, it's the one i use for work, it's the one i was given the day i started and it's the one my boss told me to use for CVs to be sent

As far as I can tell, you didn't do anything wrong legally. However I would look into asking your boss to acquire official email addresses, rather than using Hotmail. I doubt I'm alone in my distrust of businesses/entities using Hotmail and/or Gmail accounts for official use.

Since you were just doing what you had been told to do, I would bring the matter to your employers.

yeah i understand how it could look dodgy but it wasn't, i have never tried to scam anyone in my life and i certainly wouldn't start now.

just don't need the hassle of the police turning up at my door as these people would of reported me for fraud and you can get jailed for such offences

This is essentially it. Just ensure not to delete anything so you can show it to your employers tomorrow and tell them you just did exactly what they said.

so do you guys think the police would take it seriously and pay me a visit?

Apologies, but i have to give my 2 cents here. I am not a computer genius, but I am pretty sure you do not need Outlook to log into a hotmail account. I would be pretty suspicious if a job post requires me to send my details to a hotmail email account, so I cannot blame the folks who applied for the role for feeling a bit nervous. But then again - as you state that you genuinely were posting a legitimate role, you do not need to worry.
