No, just child and adult Leap cards are available. Adult fares apply over 16 years. There is a new student travel card which allows you purchase discounted tickets and cash fares. It costs €12 and you must be a full time second or third level student.

Note that this card does have Leap functionality.

Regardless of where you study, you can get one instantly at Trinity College's Student Union for €15 if you have a student card or attendance letter. That way, you don't have to arrange passport photos. It functions as a Leap card but on its own, the fares aren't discounted any more than a normal adult leap card. Bizarrely, separate student tickets aren't valid without it.

You'd wonder why they didn't just call it a student Leap card.

Because it's not just a Leap Card. NTA tender out the "Student Travelcard" franchise and Leap availability was scoped to be part of it.

I thought the Student Travelcard was always a requirement for purchasing tickets? It was when I went to college anyway.

Yes, you're right. I just don't understand why the Leap function doesn't eliminate the need to carry two separate cards if you use a weekly/monthly ticket, as a personalised Oyster card does in London.

Simply because products are yet to be released on Leap and seem to be constantly pushed back. They were originally due this summer.

That would imply that you could actually buy student tickets or get student fares with a leap card.
