Parking in Dublin

Hi guys, I've searched the forum for information, but could not find anything.
I live in Dublin since August 2011 and I think it's time to get a car :) My only concern is parking in the street.

I have no idea how is it working in here. I know more or less how to get a car and pay for it :P But still no idea where and what is needed for parking. I've found some info on the dublin city council website, but still confused. What I don't understand is the following:
The standard fee for a resident’s parking permit is:

€50 for 1 year and €80 for 2 years if you live in a house.

€400 for 1 year or €750 for 2 years if your building contains more than 4 housing units, has off-road parking available to it and is located in a low demand zone (includes converted houses and apartment blocks).

€400 for 1 year or €750 for 2 years if your building is a converted house, contains more than 4 housing units, has off-road parking available to it and is located in a heavy demand zone

I live in a building that contains more than 4 housing units, that doesn't mean I'm the owner of all of them :D

Do I still need to pay 400 euro for 1 year? Thanks in advance

A lot depends on where you live OP. If you live in the heart of the city, or the likes of D2/D4 which would have a lot of offices & commuters, parking is a lot more complicated than if you are out in the suburbs where on street parking is free and is a lot more readily available.

on street parking can be okay. depends on the area. I have seen cars getting torched by local youths. when I was apartment living a parking space could be rented for 50 euro a month. I now live in the suburbs, where parking generally comes with the accommodation.

I know that I can rent it privately, but this is not the point of my question. What I need to know is: Am I going to pay 50 euro/year or 400 euro/year for on street parking? I live in D1

A car is a hugr drain on finances. Consider a motor bike.

In Ireland? I would consider a personal water craft instead.

You are the main reason why I can't afford a parking lot rent LOL

I know there is free parking somewhere, but this doesn't ask my question.

i actually think a moped or bike of the kind would be a much better solution unless you have people and stuff to move around. for city much better.

i dont live in dublin, but free parking in a lot of places there that i use when going shopping during the day etc.

If a permit is available to you then yes you would need to pay €400. Don't take it for granted that you will get a permit though, numbers are restricted. I would contact the council directly with your address and find out if you would be able to get one before I would buy a car.
