Career Guidance Specialists

Has anybody got any recommendations for Career Guidance specialists. Not like the muck we got in school years ago :) More along the lines of career transition/ aptitude testing etc.

I'm mid thirties and need a total change of career. I'm being made redundant soon so I'm viewing it as an opportunity to change now. I've been doing my current job for 12years hence struggling to think outside the box and requiring external help!

I'd think by your mid thirties you'd know what you enjoy - I admit it took me until I was 30 to do something about it in my case.

I was looking for company recommendations, but thanks for your pointless reply.

Try ETC CONSULT (www.etcconsult.com) in Dublin. Specialists in personality and psychometric testing. They will be able to help you. Very professional outfit.

Thanks! :) Have you got personal experience of them yourself?

I was trying to subtlety highlight that you may just be looking for an excuse not to look to yourself especially after a something like being made redundant. You know best, of course.

My suggestion for what it's worth - no amount of testing is going to tell you what you have a passion for doing. No amount of trying to shoe horn yourself into something is fill the gap that you've identified in wanting a change. Find something you have a passion for and make it a career.

I was in a very similar situation myself. Having said that I realise you are just looking for a company recommendation so I'll leave you to it.

Surely, though, shoe-horning is the name of the game, at least to some extent. We might all be very well aware of what we like and don't like, but there comes a point where these interests must be matched up with the requirements and opportunities that are dictated by the economic environment - and most of us have scant enough knowledge of where those niches and gaps might lie, hence the need for guidance, no?

I think the OP has made the direction of the thread quite clear so I'll answer your question succinctly. You are right to a degree - but I think one has to be careful of the type of guidance.

Actually I've just been reminded of that Baz Luhrmann song thats appropriate in all sorts of ways :D

Yes I have. Did their Hogan Personality test which was quite interesting and useful for matching my interests and strengths to job types. I also did interview coaching with their in house psychologist. You can see the full range of services on their website. Pat Shortt one of the Directors has worked all over the world.
