I thought it had something to do with Gloria Estefan.

    Indeed

    http://www.contactmusic.com/news/how-does-dr-dr-dre-make-his-fortune-hip-hop-star-tops-forbes-rich-list_1410318
In 2011, Dr. Dre, now aged 47, earned a staggering $110 million before tax, and the bulk of that income was from sales of the headphones.

    :pac:

Must be quite a profit margin on the yokes I suspect, I wonder why that is..

They 300 euro high end headphones have worse sound quality than a 100 euro set of Audio Technicas. Thats scientifically tested.

I didn't invite anyone to spoil it..

    .. I was pre-empting the inevitable.

If people spoil it, I'll close it.. but there are some valid points with regards to the quality and price of Dr Beats.

It's not spoiling, it's warning folks who may not know about the quality/price relation of those headsets.

Believe it or not plenty of people buy headsets without trying them and just think that they need to be amazing because the price, because they look cool or because football players use them.

If I see a friend interested on them I will warn him/her about this and invite them to try a cheaper but better pair... so here in boards, I (and others) would do the same, just for the sake of helping people to get the best with their budgets.

If after trying them and compare them with other sets you want to buy them, it's up to you.

Don't really see how its thread spoiling when an OP posts a "supposed" bargain and then other posters provide links to better quality products at cheaper prices. The idea is to ascertain if something is a bargain or not and if a superior product is much cheaper then its not really a bargain. This is only a bargain for those who want a pair of beats just to be seen with them rather than being concerned with the audio quality.

I have previously read the thousands of complaints about Dr. Beats on this forum along with many other sites.

So thanks for once again reminding me how poor they are compared to the competition.

Some people just like them regardless so move on.

The moderator and his mob of merry followers will be back on now once again to contradict me once again. :D

To make you feel better, i totally agree with you.
There are people out there who work hard for their money, and if they want to treat themselves with pair of those headphones, why not?
OP was about dr.dre, bringing out AT/Sony/AKG or any other brand of headphones are OT in my view.

Dr.Dre headphones are still rip off though :D

    50 - 80 Euros I would pay tops :pac:

Some say Apple is a rip off, but i am not going to dictate one to buy htc...
Ferrari may be a rip off, but it won't stop one from buying it.
And the links you posted are dr.dre wannabee actually, and i personally do not trust those sellers tbh...
It is gadget's world, where the price is not as important as how one feels when he buys one.

Apple products are a rip off but at least your getting a quality product at the end of it, when buying Beats by Dr.Dre your paying a premium price for a product that contains no quality. It's the equivalent to buying something that looks like a Ferrari but drives like a Corsa.

Funnily enough i read a review before of fake aliexpress beats that had better sound quality than the originals. They cost about 80 quid and where nearly 100% in design.

Headphones are massive now for the fashion industry.

My teenage son loves his new Dre. Beats for fashion more than anything else. He's extremely happy and I think the design of them is pretty cool regardless of functnality.

I myself from the advice of the headphones section on Boards own a lovely practical pair of quality Sennheissers and also high Quality Audio Technica ;)

You've hit the nail on the head here. The beats headphones are essentially a fashion accessory. Anyone looking for quality audio will look elsewhere however anyone looking to impress their peers like your son will want beats. With that in mind the chinese copies linked above will do the same job for teens at a much cheaper price. Ironically most of these "copies" are reported to have better or undiscernable difference from the premium versions so if i wanted some Beats i would purchase from a site like Aliexpress rather than CPW. I know you are also very defensive on this post, but it is a bargain alert forum and even at a discount the headphones are not really a bargain as you pay a massive premium for an inferior product just because of the branding on the headphones. It would be like putting an Audi RS4 badge on a nissan micra and trying to charge an extra 10k for the privilage and then getting excited to see the RS4 micra on sale with 1k off :D

This is spiraling into a separate debate about whether the product is "worth" the money you pay for it.
My own view is that the bargain thread should be about finding a product which has a normal RRP and is selling for less, hence the "bargain".
Opinions on the quality should belong on sites/threads for reviews IMO.

tho to be fair, i quite like them myself, woukdnt buy them, but if they were free id happily take them and use them

To me something that's value for money after the discount is what's more important, which is why it's great that debates about products are allowed in Bargain alerts threads, there has been cheap TV's on here that may have interested me but other users quickly pointed out why it was cheap, had they not I may have bought something not worth it.

    IMO.

In essence we are trying to quantify if a post is an actual bargain or not, something relevant for this thread. It's not just a review of the headphones, but a discussion on whether a minimal discount on an already overflated RRP constitutes a bargain. We clearly differ on opinions so its best just to leave it at that. If someone wants a fashion accessory then go for it. If someone wants just good audio then they now know based on the info in this thread that there are better options so there is enough here to satisfy both sides of the divide.

Fair enough I suppose - if its generally allowed on the Bargain threads, then that's the way it is.
It's just I've spotted the same thing on numerous threads and whether it can or can't be debated should be cleared up formally.
Maybe just one post saying "I'd prefer this product" or "better products elsewhere" and then people can click like rather than pages and pages of argument and counter-argument.
It's just I'd rather the vast majority of the additional posts to maybe point out where to get the same product cheaper.

to the point above - you will always have for example, Apple fanboys, or Dre fanboys.. and you could waste days debating whether they are worth the money, or if Android phones or Seinnheiser headphones are better.. seems to be beside the point to me is all..

but arent reviews for headphones and headsets left to their own thread? this is after all the bargain alert thread not a review thread. if people see a discount its up to them to decide to choose to buy it and if that is based on research then all the better. its like when an antivirus bargain might get posted here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 885 ✭✭✭kendragon

If you follow that line of thinking then every bargain posted might as well be in its own locked thread. Personally I like the debate that goes on because I can make an more informed decision on something that I might be completely naive about. That being said if I really want to buy a product then the people against it aren't going to stop me. So what's the harm in the debate?

So just because it's a cheaper price there should only be the opening post and thanks posts? What about those who see the opening post think "that's a decent price" then see posts pointing out better and less expensive products, which is more of a bargain.

This isn't the "cheaper products" forum, it's the Bargain alerts, if another product is better for cheaper it is a better bargain. Debating it on thread allows those who know fcuk all about the products to make better informed decisions.

That said, I don't like beats, had a friend try to convince me they are superior audio quality to other headphones. I've some Philips in ear-phones that have better sound quality for 20 euro and are more secure on my head. I have very sensitive ears, could hear the distortion in beats for noise cancellation, which annoyed the fcuk out of me. They are a fashion accessory that happen to be headphones and nothing else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,734 ✭✭✭zarquon

This is a forum, which means a discussion platform. It's the very nature of the site. There is a big difference between a subjective bargain and an objective bargain. If someone posts a bargain TV but other posters subsequently post cheaper and higher spec TVs in the same thread then should the thread be locked or posts to better tvs be deleted. The idea is essentially to get the best deal for consumers and if better deals are subsequently posted then it highlights that the OP deal is less of a bargain than first thought. Saying that there is a link here to Aliexpress, if you want a pair of beats you may as well order from them as there is no difference in quality to those you will pay double the price for in the OP.

As a bargain accessory buy the chinese models which are visually identical. As a pair of headphones buy a superior set of sennheisers or audio technicas for cheaper. Simple really.
