Good question, plenty others fta, though.

Some of ITV channels are on astra 2a and astra 2b with a large southern footprint over europe so copyright is a problem outside Ireland and the UK with the launch of astra 2f later this month with an expected tighter footprint over the UK and ireland and more frequency available most uk companys will switch to astra 2f if required and some will be free to air.

All of the sd channels are on 1N, according to Kingofsat.net

Thanks MikeSat, but it still doesn't make sense .... who are the encrypted transmissions aimed at? Certainly not freesat viewers, who presumably can all view their own ITV regions.

So it must be sky viewers .... but why, give that there is loads of FTA SD ITV already. Is this just temporary duplication.

The encrypted ITV1 SD channels (there's a couple of HD ones elsewhere too) are all different advertising regions compared to those FTA. Astra 1N has only been in its temporary spot now for a few months, and it's possible that the channels that are encrypted may have a running clause to stay encrypted until the end of the encryption contract term. In the mid to long term the encryption will almost certainly be dropped.

When 2f arrives in position shortly some companys will have increased capacity and will not have to relay on other satellite providers for space.Itv have already stated that they are considering some pay channels on satellite, when new extra space is available. So with 2f expect some changes.

No, as I understand it, if you're a Freesat viewer who can't get your own ITV (sub-)region because its encrypted then you get a neighboring (sub-)region instead. The sub-regions have now been killed off except for advertising so this isn't as big a problem as it might have been ten years ago. Take Westcountry - they had four sub-regions (in a one hour regional news programme) at one stage but now they only have a fifteen minute opt for the entire region during the main evening news - the other fifteen minutes of the now half-hour programme are shared with what was HTV West.

So it's down to disappearing regions, legacy contracts and copyright issues. Thanks everyone ..... it makes sense now.
