Hello folks. New to the forum and new to cycling. I've only been cycling for about 5 months and I'm totally addicted. Can anyone explain the different cycling categories to me and how is a cyclist rated. I believe its mostly to do with your performance in races, a bit like golf handicaps, but if you don't race how would you know where you would roughly be categorized. As an example I have a carrera tdf road bike which weighs 14kgs (heavy compared to giant, trek etc) but I'm told its a good training bike. I hope to upgrade to a giant or something similar in the spring. I recently tried a flat 6 mile time-trial on my carrera and had a time of 15mins 44secs. Would anyone know if this is an ok time and in what category would this place ypu? Pardon my ignorance.

The categories only exist for the purposes of racing, and are based on results in mass start races in which only the first few over the line get points. Everyone else is packfill. Time trial performance is a good indictor of racing potential but skill, tactics, luck and other factors play a large part.
