I've watched both of these films having not seen them in 16 years. I must say upon reflection the Gate 2 is the better film given that there is more character and thematic development. Also we get to see the demon world. The stop motion animation is excellent. I like this film. Did you know that the satanic band Sacrifyx in the Gate 1 was based on a real life Canadian Thrash metal band called Sacrifice?

I haven't seen them in years. I think I have the second one on VHS up in the attic.. I do sorta vaguely remember it being better than the first one, sure.

The consensus seems to be that the first is the better one, and I remember at the time, 16 years ago, thinking that, but the first one is a kid's horror film, albeit a wellmade one, whereas the second is just general horror, which is why I now prefer it.

The Gate is a film I have to watch some day from beginning to end. I think I've seen the whole thing but in different parts and the wrong order. Don't think I've seen any of the sequel.

Though I remember a couple years ago, reading the plot to The Hole 3D and sounded like a similar idea.

The Gate is the first film that gave me a nightmare after watching it. I suppose I would have been around 12 or 13 given I watched it on vhs so that's what, 2 or 3 years after release. I'd say it's pretty dated now.
