removing sticky gunk from scope tube

Purchased a scope for a rifle, but the previous owner had camo tape on the front of it. I want to remove the tape and just have a plain black scope again. Can I use white spirits or nail varnish removed to remove the sticky tape residue from the scope tube without also removing the black finish on the scope? Or is there…

use warm soapy water with a cloth. dont forget to use a little elbow grease!
