3 Weeks In South Africa, Brazil or Australia??

    Hi all,

I recently started a thread regarding going to South Africa for 3 weeks but I'm a little put off going on my own due to the high crime rate there. I would love to go to South Africa but because I'm going on my own I'm worried I would have to be going back to my hotel at 8pm and staying in etc, not being able to carry my bag around, which to me isn't really much of a holiday.

Brazil's homocide rate is about a third lower, although still very high and I'm wondering if the same problem exists, eg having to go back to my hotel early and staying there (sunset is earlier in Brazil). I look to go back to my hostel/hotel around 10-11pm most days so I'm hoping most parts of Brazil are ok up till then, if not then well that sucks I don't want to be going back early, what a waste.

Alternatively I could be going back to Australia again (I was there earlier this year in february for 5 weeks) and go back to the parts I didn't see (WA, Uluru, Alice Springs, Tasmania). But I would prefer if I went somewhere new this time.

I'm looking to go around february and will be prepared to learn Portuguese for the next 6 months if Brazil is safe enough and gets the go ahead. :pac:

Alternatively I'm also thinking about San Fransisco, Argentina as well as back ups. I'm basically looking to go somewhere far away and warm next february. :P

Any advice? Can someone help me out here? :)

    Thanks

    I've been to all 3.

They are all safe if you take reasonable precautions.

Going to say brazil was brilliant....didn't expect it to be so good. Very cheap, great food and friendly locals....go for it!!

I've been in South Africa twice and never had any problems, depends where you go i suppose. I was only in JOBURG for a day, crime rate is high there but didnt see anything like what your saying down South. The Garden Route and Cape down are great, you should look into them.

Was in Brazil too, didnt take my fancy at all. I think we styaed in a wrong location and alot of people in the accom i stayed in where robbed. But many friends have been to Brazil and love it.

I also did 3 weeks in Argenitina and loved it. Travlled all over from Iguazu to Mendoza and highly recommned it. Was cold when we where there though, very cheap too.

Did San Fran too, but no need for 3 weeks there. America will obviously be more expensive. I travelled America for 3 months and had great fun there.

South Africa. It is amazing there. I go every year and I love it. Tourists are normally not affected by the crime there, just take precautions. Lock car doors, dont leave your bag on the passenger seat, carry pepper spray ( I always do and have yet to use it ). Cape Town is beautiful and the majority of people are lovely :)
