I'm going down the wrong route college wise

I have received and deferred a biotechnology course at NUIG and I'm really unsure of it. I like everything about the course and it's very interesting but I've been told by many career guidance teachers that if I go down that route, I could be unhappy.
It's been evaluated that my key strengths are in science and engineering but also in anything creative, which is conflicting. Either way, there is a good chance I won't be fulfilled in either route, whether scientific or creative, as I can't have both realistically.

Now that said, I'm not sure what to do. I am a very artistic guy and people have wondered why I haven't perused that side of things as apposed to engineering or science. But I don't know how I would go down that creative route. Ideally, I would love to get into editing videos and photos, directing, maybe animating, even photography. I'd like to be very hands on with it and not just be a graphic designer, I'd like to work on big projects which I could utilise my skills and creativity and get a satisfying end result.

So yeah, now that I've got a year to think things over I'm starting to doubt my course and where it will take me, but I'm not even sure where to being looking into something creative.

Any sort of advice for someone in this situation?

    Hey there 1ZRed.

One of the great things about college is all the extra-curricular things you can do. So if you ended up doing the biotechnology course, you could still get involved with a few socs that will interest your creative side. And you can always do little side projects yourself. You can do it the other way around too - some places let you do modules outside your degree subject, so say you were doing your degree in Digital Media or whatever (that's just the first course like that that came to my mind :p), you could do a module in biology too. Do you think doing something like that would be enough for you, or would you definitely much rather to do a course which involves both science/creativity?

Re: looking for courses, qualifax is always good.

Seeing as you have the next little while kinda free, you could maybe do an evening course in one of the fields you find interesting if you can afford it?

Science and creativity are in no way mutually exclusive. Unless you mean you are creative solely through visual media, you should have no bother going down a scientific route.

Having said that, I recommend you do a general art course. It doesn't exactly matter in what area you may want to specialise, the course would cover elements common to all visual arts. It will also allow you to sample a great range of media, which is great if you don't yet know what you want to do.

In my opinion that's the fastest way of finding out if you're cut out for a life in the creative industry:)

I wish you all the best of luck, it's an awful situation not knowing what your calling is. I'm on year two of my search and I still have only vague ideas of what i want to do, and an awful lot of work experience :p
