    Hi all,

I'm getting married in April and have decided that I want to put a poem on the inside cover about my father who passed away before I was born.

The problem I am having is finding a poem suitable, thy all seem to be about fathers that people knew. I did not know mine, only that he was a loving caring man.

I never met him but want to still show I am thinking about him on my special day.

I hope someone can help me. Please and Thanks

You have plenty of time, write your own one. Its not as hard as you think and the sentiment behind it means more than having a perfect rhyming poem.

I totally agree with Senna. I think it's more personal to have a poem in your own words about your feelings for your father.

Have a go! You'll be pleasantly surprised and get a real sense of satisfaction. Perhaps you could also have a suitable quote (about life and love, NOT death) or a picture of your father at the back of the booklet too. Just an idea.

My husband wrote the words on our candles. But he's much better at this sort of thing than I am...

Plenty of time as Senna says!

Why don't you start by jotting down EVERYTHING you know about your father? Doesn't have to be long. Bullet points will do. Speak to your mother and relatives on your father's side. Maybe they have some ideas/stories about your father they'd like to share. I bet there's loads!

Then you can start to pull something together. It'll probably take a few goes until you get something you're happy with. But give it a go. Write from the heart. Cheesy, but true.

If you're really stuck, maybe a favourite quote, poem, hymn or saying you father had.

As I have said I never met him and we do not talk much about it, because it was very hard on my mum, being pregnant and having two small kids and losing her husband so I dont bring it up, I just wanted to this for my mum as well so she knows I do think about him all the time and really wish I had of met him.

I cannot write anything I have tried for the last two years or longer since we decided we would be getting married next year I have being trying but it hasnt worked,

There are sites where you enter details and it writes a poem. Usually for greeting cards so may not be suitable!

Could your siblings help or is it too painful for them?
I saw this you could edit it a bit?

    What about this :
Dear Lord, please clear a spot for them, they should have the perfect view
Their little girls a bride today and she's counting on you
Let her feel their presence as she journeys down the aisle
But let her notice their absence if only for a while
Let her stop and think of them as she is given away
And know that if they could, they would be here with her today
Dear Lord please clear a spot for them, they should have the perfect view
And if they should feel sad today,
Dear Lord we count on you.

Just insert him or his instead of their?

    How about;

Although death has separated us physically, faith and love have bound us eternally.
Though we cannot see you, we know you are here, though we cannot touch you, we feel the warmth of your smile, as we begin our new lives.

You could drop the first line if you don't want to mention death.

Faith and love have bound us eternally and though we cannot see you, we know you are here. Though we cannot touch you, we feel the warmth of your smile, as we begin our new lives.

    Hi Eadire
I am so sorry for your loss and can sympathise - I lost my big sister a few years ago and dread getting married without her by my side :( While writing your own poem is a nice idea, it can be very stressful and emotional!! I have found some poems for you and hope they may be of help..:)

How about something like I carry your heart by EE Cummings:
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in my heart)
    i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)
i want no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)
    - e. e. cummings ~

I think its a beautiful poem - it tells how you carry someone in your heart and so they are always with you - it can have different meanings for people and yet can remind you of someone you're missing...:(

There's also this poem by Canon Henry Scott-Holland:]
    Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
I am I and you are you -
whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by my old familiar name,
speak to me in the easy way you used to.
    Put no difference in your tone;
wear no false air of solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as you always laughed, play,
smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever spoken without effort,
    without trace of shadow.
What is death but a negligible accident?
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval,
somewhere very near, just around the corner.
    All is well.
LOvely poem - but not very weddingly (if thats a word)..frown.png I also found this one in cyberspace - again author unknown:
    Though we are separated physically,
    Love has bound us eternally.

    Though we cannot see you,
    We know you are here.

    Though we cannot touch you,
We feel the warmth of your smile, as we begin a new chapter in our lives.

And now my final one - found this in cyberspace - author unknown:
My little Girl, Don't cry for me
I'll be right by your side.
I'd never miss out on this day
    that you become a bride.
I'm here with you to hold your hand
    and give your heart away
To a man God chose to take care of you
    forever from this day.
Today, I place your hand in his
    with blessings and with pride.
My little Girl, Don't cry for me
I'll be right by your side.

Hope the above is of some use to you - I hope u find something special that appeals to you!! Best of luck with your search and best wishes on your wedding day :D
