7 Seater advice needed

Hi all, as the header says, just need some advice on which 7 seater is the best.

I currently have a Ford Mondeo 1.8 petrol and love it (even if it does cost a bit to run!) but we are excitedly awaiting the arrival of our third child which is why i need to upgrade :D

I have a 4 year old and a 16 month old so space for a booster seat and 2 car seats is needed. I know i could always use the back 2 seats in a 7 seater but i want to keep them flat for pram/buggy/bike/dog and only used them when nephews/nieces are down visiting or for possible 4th child some time (a long time!) in to the future.

Personally, id love a Ford Galaxy but im afraid the budget wont stretch that far, also the tax and insurance would kill me. So i decided to look at (and took some test drives in) a Renault Grand Scenic and an Opel Zafira.

I also found a Toyota Corolla Verso and hopefully will be taking that for a test drive on Monday.

I can safely say the Opel is out simply because of the seats in the back. They are 1 continuous seat and wont fit 2 car seats and a booster seat in them.
My younger brother has a 07 Grand Scenic and this will defo fit all 3 booster/car seats in the back. The only thing is ive heard a lot of bad things about Renault having electrical problems.

The brother had a problem with 1 window in the 2 years that he has it which was fixed under the warranty he got from the garage (which has since gone out of business) he also says the Renaults from 07 onward have the electrical problem...is this true??

The details of the cars that im looking at are...

Renault grand Scenic – 1.6 Petrol, 2006, 138,000 km’s on the clock, 5,850 euro NCT till Jan ‘14

    And

    Toyota Corolla Verso – 1.6 Petrol , 2004, 128,000 km’s on the clock, 6,500 euro, NCT till Jul ‘14

To me the Scenic looks bigger but like i said, im hoping to see the Corolla monday so will have a better idea.

Ive also looked at Mitsubishi, Hyundai and VW but dont like their 7 seaters.
So really what im looking for in any advice on the Grand Scenic or the Corolla Verso.

    Thanks

I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say here...

How'd ya figure that one out?:pac:

Being serious though, the chances are the Toyota would be the more reliable but I always liked those Scenics for some reason. If practicality and reliability are key, then the Toyota easily.

On a sidenote, would a Mondeo not hold three seats in the back and have a fair large boot with it?

mmm i keep going over in my head.. "Toyota - the best built cars in the world" :D

The mondeo does indeed have a fairly big boot alright but the car wont hold 3 seats. I had the nephew down from dublin a few weeks ago and couldnt get his booster seat in between my sons seat and daughters car seat so he had to sit down with no booster seat. Thankfully no cops stopped us as i would of been in deep doo doo! :p

But like i said, the boot is fairly big and he probably would of fitted in there! LOL

The Mazda 5 is worth having a look at, they are relatively cheap second hand because most people tend to overlook them.

They're rare enough secondhand as most people overlooked buying them new as well. Nice car as 7 seaters go though.

Ya, i had a look at the Mazda 5 but has the same seat configuration at the mondeo (small seat in the middle) so wont fit 3 seats accross.

I also looked at the Nissan Note, SEAT Alhambra and a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso but they are either to expensive, to many KM's on them or the engines are to big (tax and insurance will go up) which is why i started looking at 1.6's

In most cases I'd go for renaults. But as the 2006 scenic would be older model I'd go with the Corola verso as they are a great car. And I am pretty sure the older model scenics gave trouble can't remember exactly what was wrong with them. But the toyota should stand well to you as a good family car.

Thanks for that Bpmull, much appreciated! :D

From what i can gather from reviews on line I'd say it could of been the electrics with the older scenics as well

just going over old threads, as I'm considering a 7 seater myself. Maybe you've already purchased, but FWIW I currently have a Focus - and I have 3 seats across the back. Had 2 bulky seats and 1 high-backed booster for a while, now have one bulky seat and 2 boosters. Tight fit, but they do fit. If I can do it in a Focus, you must be able to in a Mondeo.

Haven’t purchased yet, I wanted to wait until around now where the cars I was looking at would be cheaper but also I’m hoping that more cars will become available. I don’t actually need the car until around march/April so I still have a bit of time to look around.

I too have a high back booster for my 5 year old and a normal car seat, but the base on that is fairly bulky. We bought that one cause of a thing called buckle crunch where on some cars if you have the wrong car seat, the buckle may fail and we obviously didn’t want that so we went with the option of this car seat cause it can fit all cars. But now that may be the problem, my 2 year old is using that seat and with another one due at the end of March, we need a third. I’ve already tried to fit a normal booster seat but as I’ve said previous, there was no way it was gonna fit, and its literally only a few extra inches we need (not one smart comment on that please! :D)

Even if we didn’t need a new car, I would still be looking at getting one simply because with a 1.8 petrol car, powerful as it is, really drinks the stuff, I remember filling it up (about €85-€90) and driving to work about 25 mins away and a good stretch of road, once you left the town where I live and got up to 100kph it was pretty much that speed all the way down. I never once got 400 km’s in 1 week before I had to fill up. I’d say something if I was driving around the town, going up and down gears for a past time, but I wasn’t.

The cars I’m looking at now are 1.6 diesels which will do more mpg but is also cheaper to buy diesel.

Anyway. good luck finding a car kelbal, what did you have in mind?

Sorry to be brief, am on phone, check out the Avensis Verso too, a really great 7 seater with 5 individual seats in back and a false floor in boot for extra storage.....

Not trying to be smart, but surely there has to be a combination of seats, however expensive that fit in a saloon in a seat-booster-seat formation. Possibly 2 rear facing swivel seats?

Spending €700/800 might seem daft, but so long as they're safe and secure, surely that would fit the bill. Does your P/S airbag deactivate?

I know a family who had 3 small kids a few years ago and they still have the same Mondeo, quite a conscientious, safety conscious, very cautious pair too.
