I'm seeing some good enough deals on the Canon 50D on various internet websites. As far as I know the 50D isn't being manufactured any more by Canon (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Do people think this is worth a flutter to upgrade? I've had the 500D for a few years.

What are you looking to get from the 50D that your 500d can't do? It may be more worth your while to wait a bit longer and get a bigger upgrade

You know, I'm trying to come up with a decent answer to that!
I think I'm looking for a tougher and bigger body. I'm thinking of getting the 17-55 2.8 at some stage and it would probably feel more solid with the 50d than the 500d. I don't have the need to upgrade to the 7d or higher and I don't need to video recording of the 60d.

It totally depends on what you're expecting from the upgrade. If you're expecting any difference in image quality you'll be dissapointed as they both use the same 15mp Digic 4 processor. Thats not to say the 50D doesnt have any advantages over the 500D, it does. You'll have a better built camera, faster burst rate if you're shooting sports or anything fast moving. All potentially handy depending on the type of photography you shoot. If you wanted to actually see a difference in image quality perhaps look into the new 650D. Dont let the fact that its a XXXD series fool you, this has the new Digic 5 processor which handles low light amazingly well (better then the 7D without any doubt). Its an 18mp sensor allowing more detail their either 50D or 500D. It will still have a more plastic feel then the 50D but it just depends on whats more important to you.

Thanks for that. I think the 650D is out of my budget at the moment, although the better iso quality is quite tempting. Also with the 650D, I don't really have the need for the movie mode in it or the touch screen or flip out screen options. I'm hoping the get the 17-55 2.8 sooner rather than later anyway (at a deal if I can), so the better quality iso wouldn't be a massive factor if I stuck it on the 50D. I do like the better build quality alright on the 50D. Anywho I'll keep thinking!

Totally your call, I just hope the upgrade wont cost you very much.

Personally if I was spending any money on an upgrade Id be looking for at least a slight upgrade in image quality and in this case you simply wont get one. Thats just the way with Canon cameras. If you upgrade within the same sensor generation, 500D -> 50D, 550D to 7D (excluding going from crop to full frame sensor like the 5D mkII) then you're not likely to see a huge difference in image quality. What you might get in some cases are features that allow you get take a better picture in some conditions (better burst speed etc) and they're certainly not to be overlooked.

If it was a case of it costing little to nothing to upgrade then I suppose why not, but if it was even going to cost a small few hundred you'd be better off putting it towards a lens or towards a more worthwhile upgrade (that you might actually benefit from) further down the line.
