Dublin to Drogheda

Family outing in Drogheda tomorrow and I thought I would cycle up and then drive back after the do. Was planning a route on mapmyride and all was ok until the section between Balbriggon and Julianstown and there is a junction near Gormanstown Camp that loops around to allow access onto the M1 but even though I dont go near the motorway mapmyride routes me through Gormanstown camp back onto the R132 instead of the shorter loop onto the R132.

I know it is only a few km in the difference but does anyone know if that whole junction a 1-way system? on google maps it would appear to have traffic going both ways.

    Thanks, HTH

Just go around the loop without taking the left turn off it (for M1) and you'll come back on the old road again.

There's a nicer route from the back of the airport ( ST Margarets ) up through Oldtown, Garristown and past Duleek ..about 50 KM.

Head past Finglas for the R122, left onto the R130, right onto R152 and straight into Drogheda.

The road splits, so just make sure you move into the right hand lane and youll be fine. It then goes around in a loop and you come to a stop sign. The first time I went that way I thought I'd taken a wrong turn onto the motorway (because of the bridge and centre barrier), but it straightens out to a normal N road after that.

a normal N road after that.
Now an R road (R 132) - it lost it's National Primary Route status circa. 2003.

either of the alternative routes mentioned above would be preferable. the road surface for a few kilometers before Balrothery is horrible. not enjoyabe at all. you could also go through Naul and then turn right for Stamullen, avoiding the hills if they're not your thing.

When you go past The Hunstman pub there is an 'entrance' on the opposite side of the ride to which you are on ie on the coast side. The road is closed off to traffic but accessible by bike. This bypass's the motorway overpass etc and leaves you out on the path on the other side of that whole overpass thing but on the path.I cant Google map this section as its blurred (presumably for Gormanston barracks)
    BUT THEN
If you stay on the path for a few meters up to the junction then take a right and go past the quarry to the end of the road then turn left. Keep straight for as long as possible and you will eventually come to a bridge that goes over Layton estuary and into Laytown. A much better/scenic route towards Drogheda then dealing with traffic.
I will try and do a MMR for this and link it.

Thanks for all the responses, ended up getting out for a few hours in the wicklow hills so decided not to cycle up, my wife didn't fancy the idea of me arriving to a party in a sweaty mess and even worse wearing Lycra.
